Poetry readings! Ben Okri, Ruth Padel, Kaveh Akbar, Zeina Hashem Beck, and Tishani Doshi introduced by William Seighart. It was a delight to see everyone reading their works. #JLF2019

Also got to know about Seighart's book 'The Poetry Pharmacy'. So then I went to the bookstore to buy that one, but of course it was sold out. Oh well, i shall soon get my hands on it. 😎

BiblioLitten JLF brings back such happy memories and delightful talks! 😊 5y

I am NOT a poetry person. I try, and what I like is usually morbid. And not only can I not spell haiku ( TG for auto correct) I usually hate them and don‘t understand them as poetry.

But I believe in supporting teachers, so @TobeyTheScavengerMonk these are for you.

I picked up a bunch of Poetry issues at a pay-what-you-want sale at the library today! Got my eye on doing some giveaways for #poetrychallenge2018 participants at some point. 🤔☺️

Natasha.C.Barnes I don't know this journal, but it's 100% poetry inside--must be a great way to discover new favorites. 6y
vivastory The site features the entire archive & they display the current issue. Entirely free! 6y
ReadingRover Nice I love poetry. I‘ve been throwing around the idea of a poetry swap but don‘t know if I‘m ready to take it on. 6y

Natasha.C.Barnes @vivastory oh really? 😂 well I filled a bag with books at the sale and just gave a donation, so I don't necessarily feel like I paid anything for this stack, but I wonder if people wouldn't want them then. 6y
vivastory I'm sure people would still like to have them 👍 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @ReadingRover That's a lovely idea, but I understand, I'm pretty out-swapped right now. Even though I really want to host a Summer Reading Program-themed swap this summer, so I'm still thinking about it, unless it already exists annually. As for poetry, why don't you join us for #poetrychallenge2018? (edited) 6y
ReadingRover @Natasha.C.Barnes cool. I didn‘t realize there was one. I‘ll check it out. Maybe I‘ll set up a swap sometime in the spring for poetry after all of these finish up. Also if you‘re giving the journals away I‘d love one! I can swap you a book for it 😉 (edited) 6y
ReadingRover @vivastory What‘s the site? 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @ReadingRover Yeah, I'm running it actually. It's a super low-key/DIY challenge--you just pick 1 poet/month (or more if you want) and explore their work (from a few poems to a cross-section, to reading a particular published collection) and post about it under the hashtag. It's been a great way to learn about new (to me) poets. I haven't even been a big poetry reader, even tho it often moves me, which is partially why I'm doing this. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @ReadingRover It started as a personal challenge that other ppl expressed interest in, so now we're doing it together. ☺️ As for the journal, I'll totally do a swap with you and send you some issues! Send me your mailing address! (Natasha.Barnes at gmail) 6y
ReadingRover @Natasha.C.Barnes Awesome I just checked it out! I‘m in. I have 2 indie poetry books right in front of me so I‘ll use one of those since I haven‘t read either. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @ReadingRover Sounds perfect! 6y

ReadingRover @vivastory 😆 we followed each other at the same time. When I hit follow my notification blinked on and off! 6y
vivastory @ReadingRover 😂 I'm glad to meet you! 6y
CandycaneBelle So fun! Love this idea 6y
Erin7 @Natasha.C.Barnes I‘m part of a book club on Goodreads that is doing something very similar as a group. All of the participants are novices that are interested in learning about poetry in a way that‘s not too intimidating. I‘d love to participate in this challenge too if that‘s alright. It sounds like a great way to challenge myself in this genre. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Erin7 Oh of course! It's open to all. I'll post the main graphics again as we start our second month. 6y
Erin7 @Natasha.C.Barnes Sounds great. Thank you😊. 6y
readinginthedark Ooh! 😍Is there a mix of debut and well-known poets? Journals are a really great way to discover poets, I think. And I picked up my book of poetry today for February! I might start reading it early because I‘m so excited. 😆 6y
Erin7 @kindergartenkat read the comments for details on this challenge. 6y

Hey @mhillis ! Though of course you can share what you're reading however you please, here is a totally blank "official" #poetrychallenge graphic in case you want to use it. ? I'm just obsessed with this wallpaper pattern. Sometimes even 6 months is too far to plan--I did 6 just because that's how much I could fit in one page. ? #poetrychallenge2018

mhillis Oh this is so nice @Natasha.C.Barnes 😊 I like this pattern too. Thank you!! 6y

This is Bokusui Wakayama. He is, or was, a tanka poet. Today, one of my students, who is a nationally-recognized calligraphy artist in Japan, told us that her even more famous 90-something-year-old calligraphy teacher has recently penned (calligraphized?) some of Wakayama's poetry. Ever since googling this image on the poet's Wikipedia page, I've been more than a little smitten by his handsome visage. Don't tell my boyfriend!

shawnmooney Given that Wakayama died in 1928, aged 43 - drank himself to death, sadly - my Kenji has little to worry about. Here is the poet's – this is what they call it – "death haiku": A parting word?
The melting snow
is odorless.

HippieChickHomeschool Dang! That's a beautiful poem! I have to go research now because I've never even heard of Japanese death poems 7y
LeahBergen Thanks for the reminder @vivastory . I've been meaning to hunt down a copy of that book. 7y
vivastory @LeahBergen it's definitely worth searching for 7y
