Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know
Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know | Ranulph Fiennes
9 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Ranulph Fiennes has travelled to the most dangerous and inaccessible places on earth, almost died countless times, lost nearly half his fingers to frostbite, raised millions of pounds for charity and been awarded a polar medal and an OBE. He has been an elite soldier, an athlete, a mountaineer, an explorer, a bestselling author and nearly replaced Sean Connery as James Bond. In his autobiography he describes how he led expeditions all over the world and became the first person to travel to both poles on land. He tells of how he discovered the lost city of Ubar in Oman and attempted to walk solo and unsupported to the North Pole - the expedition that cost him several fingers, and very nearly his life. Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes OBE, 3rd Baronet, looks back on a life lived at the very limits of human endeavour.

I can see how people may not love this one, but I did. The writing style is sparse & I suspect rather accurately reflects the author. You also really need to read the appendix‘s to get to the good ending but it‘s an amazing book & he‘s had a truly amazing life. I really want a “The last 10yrs” update and will definitely read more of his many works. 😊 A great escape and fantastic inspiration, especially with a series of hard work houseguests!! 😊

DO NOT READ THIS QUOTE IF SQUEAMISH. Also perhaps avoid it in crowded Starbucks in the middle of Mumbai where the shudders and inevitable exclamations will not go unnoticed or unremarked and explanations of Antarctic exploration frostbite amputations are going to get you more looks than the initial reactions. #lifelessons (flying my “crazy foreigner” flag high today...🤦🏻‍♀️).

CarolynM Ugh!!! 6y
UrsulaMonarch WHOA! That was rough even after bracing myself, thanks for the warning!! 😂😳🤢 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @UrsulaMonarch he even includes photos... I shall not share those!!! 😱😱😱😱 (quite intense.... fantastic book though!) 6y

GlassAsDiamonds @UrsulaMonarch yeah... he does NOT warn you and the caption reads, to paraphrase, “removed mummified ends of fingers” 😱😱🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y

Sir Ranulph not looking all that happy. We are waiting for the running around of the day to commence but it‘s already gone rather pear shaped. We farewelled Visitors One on Saturday. Visitors Two were meant to arrive late last night but circled above Delhi while their connecting flight left it...(aside: some painfully learnt Expat advice: when traveling, stick with one airline, they usually fix problems like this!). All fun and games here today!!

UrsulaMonarch This book sounds wild!!! 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @UrsulaMonarch it really was!!! (And there‘s something very weird about reading about polar travel in a “winter” that‘s current 31c/88f but it‘s a great ride! 😊😊😊 6y

Sometimes, Fiennes does manage amazing lyricism but it‘s mainly when he‘s describing what must be a truly breathtaking landscape. Mostly, he is very matter of fact (but I‘m saving this gem for the next time someone asks me why I like something I like!!! 😂😂😂).

I am torn. Parts of this book are amazing. Parts, like the red, make me want to find and shake Sir Ranulph (just how much *garbage* did they leave dotted around the world???) and parts, like the blue, are just so dryly caustic, you have to laugh. Liking it so far but if I hear that an environmentalist has taken him to task, I shall not be surprised!

Day late but #HumpDayPost !

1). Today, I lost Puff then found she‘d made a hunting hide from our Christmas wreath and was stalking pigeons (who were safely outside the closed window). 😂 #LetsmakeTricksySmile #CatsofLitsy

2). My deepest love is for a very old Panasonic flip phone. ❤️ (iPhone)

3). Nuts!

4). The tagged & yep, love Sir Ranulph! A tad dense but we‘re currently transiting the globe 😊

5). To play: waterpolo. To watch: dressage.
