Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: The Mavericks Who Plotted Hitler's Defeat | Giles Milton
Six gentlemen, one goal: the destruction of Hitler's war machine In the spring of 1939, a top-secret organization was founded in London: its purpose was to plot the destruction of Hitler's war machine through spectacular acts of sabotage. The guerrilla campaign that followed was every bit as extraordinary as the six men who directed it. One of them, Cecil Clarke, was a maverick engineer who had spent the 1930s inventing futuristic caravans. Now, his talents were put to more devious use: he built the dirty bomb used to assassinate Hitler's favorite, Reinhard Heydrich. Another, William Fairbairn, was a portly pensioner with an unusual passion: he was the world's leading expert in silent killing, hired to train the guerrillas being parachuted behind enemy lines. Led by dapper Scotsman Colin Gubbins, these menalong with three othersformed a secret inner circle that, aided by a group of formidable ladies, single-handedly changed the course Second World War: a cohort hand-picked by Winston Churchill, whom he called his Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Giles Milton's Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a gripping and vivid narrative of adventure and derring-do that is also, perhaps, the last great untold story of the Second World War.

Supporting local businesses by shopping online and getting a head start on Christmas gifts. 😎
(Spoiler alert: Everyone is getting books.)

LiteraryinLawrence I‘m sure they will love the books! 4y
Amiable @LiteraryinLititz I‘m very careful in my deliberation when purchasing books as gifts. I try to match books with people as best as I can. My in-laws tell me they look forward to their gifts every year because they can‘t wait to see which books I picked for them. I don‘t know if they are just being nice by saying that, but it makes me feel good anyway! 😀 4y
underground_bks You‘re amazing and I know your orders meant a lot to the indies you ordered from! I LOVE Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and it is the warm and fuzzy sci-fi self care the world needs right now! 4y
Amiable @underground_bks Oh, I‘m so glad to hear that about “Long Way to a Small Angry Planet”! I bought it for my friend Doug who loves sci-fi and post-apocalyptic literature. (And also? I always buy books from my local indies. I refuse to patronize Amazon! So there‘s that. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙂) (edited) 4y
Amiable @underground_bks I saw on your profile that you own a bookstore in Georgia! So I just went to your site and ordered 5 books and 2 book masks (super cute!). My stepmom will enjoy her Christmas gifts from you! 👍🏼 (edited) 4y

Fascinating account of espionage, sabotage reconnaissance, and localized resistance conducted by criminals, rogues, and survivalists, with brutal tactics and grit. Warfare like no one had ever seen before that broke all the rules of gentlemanly conduct. An interesting book for any history lover. It focuses on ordinary people called on to do extraordinary things during wartime, or, how candy and condoms made bombs.

Really enjoyed this book. Big fan of WWII history and lesser known stories/backstories of major conflicts and units. This book was very interesting.

Second NF in a row! What is happening to me??

Third of the way through this and so far, so very good! Amazing story about the British men and women who decided to buck tradition and fight “dirty” in WWII.

B&N sent me coupons. I must be #insaneinthebrain. This is my #bookhaul from tonight and does not include the books I bought for Mom's birthday. #90sinjuly

At least no one can say that my taste is books is too narrow.

Robothugs When there are coupons involved I can't control what happens after I've entered a bookstore. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
DGRachel @Robothugs Right? Plus - sales! The B&N classics were $5 each, I hit the buy 2 get 1 free paperback table, and the tagged book was 50% off! (I have a problem, I know.) 7y
Cinfhen I'm avoiding B&N for those very reasons- 7y

A gift from a friend. I did not like this as much as I thought would, perhaps because I was not sure what the authors focus was. Part history of a group of weapons developers and trainers who created created and armed British special forces in WW2 but equally a partial history of the missions of the Special Operations Executive. Having read a history of the SOE I found myself wanting more of the first and less of the second.

Yes! Yes! I listened to Agent Zigzag, and also to Doublecross, last year, and loved them. This one was just as good. Love these stories!

#TBRtemptation post! This was the actual name of a top-secret group of men hand-picked by Churchill in 1939. 6 gentlemen, 1 goal: the destruction of Hitler's war machine by sabotage. 1 man was rated the world's leading expert on silent killing. Another was a maverick engineer, especially with bombs. They were led by an overly-dapper Scotsman & aided by a group of formidable women. Vivid narrative history at its finest! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

vivastory Reading the description I can't help but hear Brad Pitt in Inglorious Basterds "We're going to kill us some Nazis" 7y
