An Edgar Award Nominee: The terrifying true story of savage murders, a terrorized midwestern town, and the serial killer who could have lived next door In 1967, during the time of peace, free love, and hitchhiking, nineteen-year-old Mary Terese Fleszar was last seen alive walking home to her apartment in Ypsilanti, Michigan. One month later, her naked bodystabbed over thirty times and missing both feet and a forearmwas discovered, partially buried, on an abandoned farm. A year later, the body of twenty-year-old Joan Schell was found, similarly violated. Southeastern Michigan was terrorized by something it had never experienced before: a serial killer. Over the next two years, five more bodies were uncovered around Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan. All the victims were tortured and mutilated. All were female students. After multiple failed investigations, a chance sighting finally led to a suspect. On the surface, John Norman Collins was an all-American boya fraternity member studying elementary education at Eastern Michigan University. But Collins wasnt all that he seemed. His female friends described him as aggressive and short tempered. And in August 1970, Collins, the Ypsilanti Ripper, was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole. Written by the coauthor of The French Connection, The Michigan Murders delivers a harrowing depiction of the savage murders that tormented a small midwestern town.

This was a good book to listen during my commute and when doing chores. Some language is out dated but it does keep with the times of the book.

I live within the radius of these murders currently. My mother went to Eastern right after he was convicted so a lot of the security items were still being implemented. They have changed the names in the book but it does not detract from the engrossing story line.

I listened to the audiobook, which was excellently narrated. THE MICHIGAN MURDERS was written about ten years after the original crimes, which occurred between 1967 and 1969. It is not for the faint of heart. The murders of these seven women were brutal. So glad they caught the psychopath who committed them.
The book follows the disappearances, the hunt for the killer, and the trial. Perfect book for true-crime fanatics! #truecrime #murderinos

What is your opinion on an author changing basically ALL the names involved? Should they leave the names in? Does it make a difference to you as the reader? Is the author‘s reasoning in this case acceptable?
I have my thoughts and opinions on it, but I want to see yours first.

Kaye I don‘t really care , especially with true crime books. I think there are people , even if playing a minor role, such as being an eyewitness or neighbor of a victim, might have been so scared by the event, or maybe hounded by reporters or questioned ( or even a suspect) , by the police. They probably just want to remain anonymous..or maybe the author thinks they should. (edited) 6y
OrangeMooseReads @Kaye I agree with that. I think with this book and others like it where it was a smaller permanent community it is good to protect the individuals. Sometimes the names just don‘t matter as much. 6y
CoverToCoverGirl If done to protect the innocent I‘m okay with it .. I can respect that people don‘t want or need the notoriety that comes along with such gruesome high profile cases just because they happen to be a witness .. these unlucky witnesses should be able to live normal lives without being harassed and hounded by the public or news media. 6y

My next #truecrime I only have the ebook edition so it might take me a bit longer to read since I can‘t seem to read as long on the Kindle or iPad. And I can‘t do the ebook at night, it doesn‘t have the same affect as a physical book.

CoverToCoverGirl Physical copies are always optimal when possible 😊 6y

Who doesn't like true crime stories? This book is about serial murders that occurred between 1967 and 1969 in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area in Michigan. I have special interest in these murders because my sister went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor at the time these were occurring.

Yournewfriendsams 😱I lived in Ypsi for years...never heard of this! Must read asap! Thanks for sharing! 7y
suvata It was quite the mystery back in the day. 7y

This was a solid foray into true crime. @LitHousewife recommended it to me after I read The Red Parts, by Maggie Nelson. This was originally published in 1976 but was recently rereleased. If you enjoy true crime, you'll enjoy this. #netgalley

LitHousewife Enjoy, get your pants scared off of you. Same thing (for me anyway). 🤗 I'm glad you enjoyed it! 8y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders Oh! I have The Red Parts on my TBR! I'll have to add this one now too! 8y

Suzze I remember these murders! I was in high school. If the map went a little bit to the right, you'd see my house! Now I have to read this. 8y
Reviewsbylola Oh, that's scary! @Suzze 8y
Reviewsbylola It was interesting to read this shortly after The Red Parts because this book was written so long ago that it was still believed that Jane Mixer was a part of the Michigan Murders, when in fact she was murdered by someone else, which The Red Parts explains. @Penny_LiteraryHoarders 8y
bermudaonion This sounds right up my alley. 8y
ValerieAndBooks I should read this sometime -- I lived in Ann Arbor for several years and my kids were born in the hospital in Ypsilanti (but long after it all happened) and occasionally the local paper would revisit this story. 8y

#TBRTuesday, #netgalley edition. I have been working really hard to keep my Netgalley que manageable. I always have a book going on my ereader but I read them at a much slower pace. I tend to gravitate towards non fiction on my ereader too.

[DELETED] 2232195534 America's Most Haunted Hotels looks like a good one to save for October! 😱 8y
LitHousewife They must be rereleasing The Michigan Murders. I read an old paperback my mom had back in the 80s. Scared the crap out of me, especially because I went to one of the colleges mentioned. 8y
Reviewsbylola @LitHousewife They rereleased it earlier this summer I think. You mentioned it to me when I read The Red Parts so I was so thrilled to get it through NG. 8y

LitHousewife @Reviewsbylola I still need to read Red Parts! I'm glad you found it on NG. Read it during the day. 😀 8y
Reviewsbylola Haha, of course my main ebook reading time is at night when I am putting the kids to bed. 😁 As long as my big, intimidating husband is home to protect me I usually don't get scared. 😂 @LitHousewife 8y

I read this in college and it scared me to death because I went to one of the colleges involved. I still get freaked out when little details like hair clippings in panties come to mind. I'm looking forward now to reading The Red Parts, which is related. Thanks for the tip, @rebeccaschinsky.
