Panpan

Verhulst would have done better to stick to his journalistic instincts in these fictional vignettes chronicled by a photographer and resident of a Belgium asylum for those entering the country illegally. The one character trait he seemed to be going for in his MC was 'unlikable', but that and a bunch of cynical & ostentatiously clever wordplay doesn't make a character. Too bad- it seems like the same events could have been compellingly portrayed.

merelybookish Sorry it was a disappointment but I do enjoy a pan! 😬😉 6y
Billypar @merelybookish I do too in a weird way- I have so few that I have to savor them 😋 6y

Bailedbailed

I was sent this by the Queen of Bailing but I have a problemski with the tone of the narrator. This is the second supposedly humorous 21st century novel translated from Dutch that I've bailed on, so I might just say that I'm not resonating with Dutch "humor," which I'm gonna need to keep in quotation marks.

Ms_T Oh no ☹️ 7y
shawnmooney I‘d have been surprised if you liked it - I felt thoroughly slimed by the tone 7y
shawnmooney What was the other Dutch DNF? 7y
shawnmooney Ah - I‘d heard good things but see it‘s about ennui so I‘d probably bail too 😂 7y
Ranchan I'm Dutch and have never heard of this book 🤣 Also skipped The Evenings and many other great literary works (Discovery of Heaven, Multatuli), preferring English lit instead 😁 7y
ReadingEnvy @shawnmooney it's ennui but also described as hilarious which is possibly the worst combination 7y
Abailliekaras I‘m intrigued! 6y

Bailedbailed

I guess Verhulst (whose 'Mme. Verona' I absolutely loved) means well with this warts-and-all story of refugees in a Belgian asylum centre, but a third of the way in I have yet to encounter a character who wasn't perfectly odious. No thanks.

Bibliogeekery You seem very skillful at bailing when you aren't enjoying a book! I can never do it. I keep hoping it will redeem itself. Do you have a process? A certain page count or something? 7y
shawnmooney @Bibliogeekery Thanks - it just might be my one and only skill! A process? Hmm, it's a very subjective and complex algorithm involving the degree to which my reading pace starts to slow down multiplied by how much my gorge is rising in my throat plus how much nearby unread books are sparkling and beckoning to me divided by the book count addition and ability to discuss a book that I finished but disliked which I'd forego by bailing. :) 7y
Bibliogeekery @shawnmooney 😂 Haha! Very complex algorithm! 7y

I started this novel about refugees in Belgium a few days ago. I haven't been able to get into it yet, but hopefully I will. It's not the first thing I noticed about this passage, but how strange it is to find this archaic, unusual spelling of 'surprise'!

ReadingEnvy I have this on my 2017 borders tbr list so I'll be interested in your opinion. The reviews seemed mixed. 7y
shawnmooney @ReadingEnvy So far, it hasn't grabbed me. But here's hoping. I certainly was wowed by 7y

I enjoyed another of this Flemish writer's novels (linked below) so much that I ordered this one. I'm going to try to get to it for next month's #backlistbinge. This one is about asylum-seekers in Belgium, so quite a departure.

Flaneurette I ordered my first book depository book and I didn't get a bookmark! I'm unreasonably pissed about it 7y
