Madame Verona Comes Down The Hill
Madame Verona Comes Down The Hill | Dimitri Verhulst
7 posts | 2 read | 13 to read
Years ago, Madame Verona and her husband built a home for themselves on a hill in a forest above a small village. There they lived in isolation, practising their music, and chopping wood to see them through the cold winters. When Mr Verona died, the locals might have expected that the legendary beauty would return to the village, but Madame Verona had enough wood to keep her warm during the years it would take to make a cello - the instrument her husband loved - and in the meantime she had her dogs for company. And then one cold February morning, when the last log has burned, Madame Verona sets off down the village path, with her cello and her memories, knowing that she will have no strength to climb the hill again. Poignant, precise and perfectly structured, this is a story of one woman's tender and enduring love - as a wife, and as a widow.

Pickpick

Set in rural Flanders, this is a surprisingly entertaining tale of love, terminal illness, dogs, and suicide. Two decades after her husband's suicide, Mme. Verona realizes she's become too infirm to walk unaided up the steep hill to her house, and decides to end her life. I'd never heard of this Flemish writer, Dimitri Verhulst, before but I intend to read more by him. A novel as enigmatic as its cover and title.

Picked this up at a used bookstore having heard nothing about the book or its author. Pretty sure it's my first Dutch novel (CORRECTION: Verhulst is a Dutch-speaking Belgian). I am about to board the plane out of Saskatoon bright and early this morning, and have just read the first few pages: I'm smitten! ❤❤

Lindy Safe travels. I like the looks of that book. 😊 (edited) 7y

shawnmooney @Lindy Now that I finished the book, and done some googling, I want to make a correction: the author is a Dutch-speaking Belgian. I loved this book so much I think I'm going to track down another of his novels in time for February's #BacklistBinge. 7y
Lindy That reminds me of another book I've intended to read, also by a Belgian. Maybe 2017 is the year I will finally read 7y
