Blade of the Immortal: Omnibus, Volume 1
Blade of the Immortal: Omnibus, Volume 1 | Hiroaki Samura
12 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
A cursed, seemingly immortal warrior aids a young girl in her quest for revenge, as the students of a brutal new sword school tear a bloody path across Japan. Hiroaki Samura's massive manga series spawned an anime run, a spinoff novel, an art book, and a live-action film! Samura's storytelling tour-de-force also won Japan's Media Arts Award, several British Eagle Awards, and an Eisner Award, among other international accolades. Intense and audacious, Blade takes period samurai action and deftly combines it with a modernist street idiom to create a style and mood like no other work of graphic fiction. Blade of the Immortal Omnibus Volume 1 contains the first 3 volumes of Blade of the Immortal by Dark Horse. "Samura's work will thrill you, engage you, and even horrify you like no other artist working in film or print today."-Geof Darrow

I don‘t read a lot of manga but picked this up after I saw an author describe it as the best revenge story since The Count of Monte Cristo. A mostly immortal warrior helps a young girl who is out for revenge for the murder of her parents. As you might imagine, there is plenty of adventuring along with murder & mayhem as well as some lighter moments. It‘s a good story, the art is fantastic and I‘ll definitely continue reading it.

Excited about this week‘s #bookmail which came from a newspaper and an author recommendation. The tagged book was described by an author as the best revenge story since The Count of Monte Cristo—how could I not want to read it?!? The second book, Polaris Rising, got a rave review in the New York Times which, of course, drew my attention. Looks perfect for a long flight and since I have one those coming up, I had to have it!

ravenlee I LOVED Polaris Rising! I can‘t wait for the sequel this fall. 5y

I saw this at the store the other day, another reminder that I need to start reading the manga series. Not a big fan of Miike but I‘m intrigued enough to want to watch it after reading the manga.

🍶Classic tale of vengeance.
🍶Marvellous homage to jidai-geki genre w/unique twists that make it more original.
🍶Redefines chanbara medium while respecting the foundational facets.
🍶Akin to Akira Kurosawa‘s work.
🍶Multi-dimensional characters.
🍶Breathtaking pencil illustrations contribute to dark, gritty, & brutal atmosphere.
🍶Vividly violent; extremely graphic.
🍶Familiarity w/Japanese history makes the story more insightful.
🍶Cont‘d below

BiblioNyan 🍶Full-page mandala style finales of specific fight sequences truly encapsulate the genius of Samura‘s artistic creativity. 🍶The best graphic novel serial I‘ve ever read (thus far), manga or otherwise. 🍶Absolutely not suitable for kiddos of any kind. 🍶Highly rec‘d for fans of classic samurai narratives. 🍶5/5. 6y

This is absolutely fucking brilliant!! It‘s a breathtaking homage to jidai-geki (period samurai drama), which is reminiscent of Akira Kurosawa chanbara films, yet it completely breaks the tropes and follows a gloriously unique take on the genre. It‘s got punk nihilistic sensibility with science fiction details, & the finest pencil artwork I have ever seen in my life. Mind-BLOWN!!

I love it when special care is taken to offer informative notes on the stories being told, specifically where misinterpretations can occur. It‘s so important and can help to enhance the reading experience respectfully. I wish more books included such notes.

My #LitsyPartyOfOne just started and is in full swing! 😁🍷🧀♥️📖 I haven't got much left until I finish Blade, but luckily the next book is already waiting in line. I hope all those of you who still need to make it through the workday will be done soon to join the party. I'm by no means an introvert, but I sure love a Friday night like this 😊

I-read-and-eat Even non-introverts need some alone book time every now and again 😊 Enjoy your party! I still have some meetings to get through. 7y

So much for no book buys in January, but happy with today's #bookhaul :) besides, they needed a home and I was happy to oblige!

Excited to be reading: my first Jack Reacher novel, a promising manga series, a medieval work written by France's first professional lady writer, an acclaimed work in non-fiction and one of my favorite magazines celebrating 50 years of the 2nd Doctor

vivastory Good haul. Where did you buy them? 7y

I gotta say that my highly anticipated manga read for 2017 is Blade of the Immortal. It's been a story of interest since I watched the anime years and years ago 😉 👍

The manga genre is that of historical Japan and action/adventure. The story tells a tale of redemption, revenge and forgiveness. So excited!
