Extraordinary Adventures
Extraordinary Adventures: A Novel | Daniel Wallace
12 posts | 8 read | 15 to read
Edsel Bronfman works as a junior executive shipping clerk for an importer of Korean flatware. He lives in a seedy neighborhood and spends his free time with his spirited mother. Things happen to other people, and Bronfman knows it. Until, that is, he gets a call from operator 61217 telling him that hes won a free weekend at a beachfront condo in Destin, Florida. But theres a catch: the offer is intended for a couple, and Bronfman has only seventy-nine days to find someone to take with him. The phone call jolts Bronfman into motion, initiating a series of truly extraordinary adventures as he sets out to find a companion for his weekend getaway. Open at last to the possibilities of life, Bronfman now believes that anything can happen. And it does. A large-hearted and optimistic novel, Extraordinary Adventures is the latest from the New York Times bestselling Daniel Wallace.

I‘ve started and stopped this review at least 10 times in the last week. So just let me say I thought this book was fine, maybe even great. As someone who leans introverted, I found myself identifying with Edsel‘s tendency to over-analyze and second-guess every aspect of life.

Reggie That scene at the funeral with the husband and high school bf of the girl who died, super awkward. 6y
Lauram @Reggie I found myself cringing through a lot of this book. (edited) 6y
Reggie Lolol, oh yeah, I had forgotten about that. 6y

Mehso-so

This took me forever. I think it's because the narrator is so freaking awkward. If you enjoyed A Confederacy of Dunces, this might be the thing for you.

Edsel Bronfman leaves his #9to5 to attend the funeral of a girl he may or may not have had sex with back in high school. Edsel was never sure, no girls had ever and since then showed him any attention so he really doesn‘t know if he‘s a virgin. By the smirk given by the husband and another ex boyfriend after the funeral, when he introduces himself as an ex boyfriend, Edsel realizes, he is indeed still a virgin. This was an extremely awkward scene.

Starting #24in48 at the car dealership. I have this book that I keep avoiding and my kindle, so there are absolutely no excuses. Please excuse the mess.

Part of me thinks I‘m being unfair to this book because I just read Dear Cyborgs, which was like eating an electric tangerine sherbet, then going to vanilla. Edsel Bronfman gets a phone call saying he‘s won a trip but the catch is he has to bring someone. Edsel now has 3 months to find someone to go with him. At the age of 34, Edsel has to confront and overcome, very awkwardly at times, his mundane and still a virgin, existence. It was ok.

EvieBee Love the name, Edsel. What a car! 6y

Edsel Bronfman is an especially endearing Everyman, surrounded by a colorful cast of characters which includes his shady drug-dealing neighbors, his lively but demented mother, and the eclectic occupants of the Cranston building. It's definitely whimsical, but it's not frivolous--there is a lot of truth here, easily swallowed alongside spoonfuls of narrative sugar. The most fun I've had reading a book in a good long while. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ramyasbookshelf I started reading this recently and it's been a fun quick read! Need to get back to it soon. 7y

Misread this as "Bronfman killed Bettina," which would have been... a significant plot twist.

A bit of insomnia. I figured a few pages of the new ARC I received will help me out a bit. Started reading. Suddenly realized I'm already a 115 pages in! Should I just stay up and finish this thing? ;)

Hooked_on_books Do it! Sleep is for non-readers. 😬 7y
