The Last Hundred Days
The Last Hundred Days: A Novel | Patrick McGuinness
4 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
Once the gleaming "Paris of the East," Bucharest in 1989 is a world of corruption and paranoia, in thrall to the repressive regime of Nicolae Ceau?escu. Old landmarks are falling to demolition crews, grocery shelves are empty, and informants are everywhere. Into this state of crisis, a young British man arrives to take a university post he never interviewed for. He is taken under the wing of Leo O'Heix, a colleague and master of the black market, and falls for the sleek Celia, daughter of a party apparatchik. Yet he soon learns that in this society, friendships are compromised, and loyalty is never absolute. And as the regime's authority falters, he finds himself uncomfortably, then dangerously, close to the eye of the storm. By turns thrilling and satirical, studded with poetry and understated revelation, The Last Hundred Days captures the commonplace terror of Cold War Eastern Europe. Patrick McGuinness's first novel is unforgettable.

This is a great fictionalised version of the last hundred days of Nicolae Ceacescu‘s corrupt and despotic regime in Romania in 1989. I must admit it has been a bit surreal reading it whilst watching the chaotic end to the Trump administration unfold in the US. They were each from different ends of the political spectrum but the similarities and damage they‘ve caused are eerily similar. Interesting reading.

BarbaraBB I enjoyed this one too 3y

#BookReport 33/20

Three books this week plus a dent in The Eighth Life, of which I posted earlier this week. Bunny was just okay for me but I reckon the discussion during our #Back2School weekend will be great.

Cinfhen I didn‘t know you started THE EIGHTH LIFE!!!! I‘m so curious if it‘s worth the hype....and page count 😁 4y
TrishB Yes discussion will be great 👍🏻 I‘m not sure I have the brain power for the 8th Life at the moment. 4y

“... a system that‘s on its knees in a city that‘s coming down. That‘s not evil out there, that dark cloud, the Securitate, the motorcade, the decoy dogs... it‘s not evil. It‘s failure, that‘s all, failure. “

This quote about the last hundred days of Ceaucescu‘s #Romania, seen through the eyes of a British ex-pat, says it all. Scary times and betrayal all around.

BarbaraBB @IuliaCG Here is my review. I learned a lot about the downfalls of communism in Romania in a very readable way! 4y
IuliaC @BarbaraBB I've added it to my list too 😊 I am curious if its entirely fiction or reality inspired 😁 4y
Librarybelle This sounds very interesting! 4y
BarbaraBB @IuliaCG The author lived in Bucharest for a while so I think it will be reality inspired. I hope so 😃 4y
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle It‘s good. I think you would like it. 4y

I bought this book 7 years ago and am just starting it now. What‘s the longest you‘ve owned a book without reading it?

Melissa_J 20 years! 😳 6y
BookNAround Ummm. I have some I bought in high school and my 30th reunion is next year. 😱 6y
Soubhiville Probably about 12 years... I‘m guessing though. 6y

LazyDays Maybe 15 years or so.😬😊 6y
LazyDays @BookNAround it's ok, there's still time!😆💜 6y
BarbaraBB I think I‘ve owned this one for at least seven years too and I might add some years to that 😀 6y
Texreader Probably Lonesome Dove I finally read last year. I had it since 1986. And I loved it. 6y
Soubhiville Mine was Sons and Lovers by DH Lawrence, and it was given to me by an ex. When I finally did try to read it, I bailed and donated it. 6y
BookNAround @TrishB I keep an excel list in the order I buy the tbr so the two oldest on the list are The Wings of the Dove by Henry James and Stories of the Old South edited by Ben Forkner and Patrick Samway. Usually I try to read at least one impossibly old tbr a year so eventually I‘ll move onto books I‘ve had since college instead of high school. 😂 6y
minkyb Too long. 6y
Melissa_J Mine is The Far Pavilions by M.M. Kaye. I have a few others that are close behind in TBR pile age, but that one has definitely been waiting the longest. 6y
Jabberwocky @Melissa_J that book was on my tbr for ages too, but it was so amazing when I finally got around to reading it!! 6y
