Funny Bones: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras | Duncan Tonatiuh
43 posts | 20 read | 7 to read
"Tells the story of how the amusing calaveras--skeletons performing various everyday or festive activities--came to be. They are the creation of Mexican artist Josae Guadalupe (Lupe) Posada (1852-1913) ... [and] have become synonymous with Mexicos Daia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival. Juxtaposing his own art with that of Lupe's, author Duncan Tonatiuh brings to light the ... life and work of a man whose art is beloved by many but whose name has remained in obscurity"--Amazon.com.

This story is about how calaveras came to be. The story takes place between 1852-1913 about a young boy named Lupe who learned the art of printing. He drew political cartoons while his country was not known for freedom of speech. He is best know today for his calvera drawings which have become synonymous with mexicos Day of the Dead.

#DearDecember Day 11: Here, the reader gets introduced to a little-known-artist named José Guadalupe Posada who popularized the “#festive bony figures calaveras,” often seen during the Day of the Dead. The book traces Posada‘s history as far back as 1852, the year he was born, along with a description of his huge family. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-bdI

Funny Bones by Duncan Tonatiuh, 2015. In this book posada ‘s calaveras or artworks of skeletons are displayed especiallg on the day of the dead! The illustrations throughout the book are very detailed and colorful as well. This book is a great way to discuss traditions in cultures. I really like the fact that the author uses English but also incorporates Spanish as well!

Not sure how to point this:
1 point participation, 2 points theme (skulls?) = 3 points ? (It‘s not about Halloween but Day of the Dead so day after Halloween)

BeansPage Yes you scored it correctly. It would be three points. 🧟‍♀️ 5y

Funny bones was a overall pretty good book! It is very informational about how calaveras came to be. Also talks about how day of the day came to be. This is a great book for your classroom because it is a very teachable reading.

Funny bones by Duncan Tonatiuh is a nonfictional book that was published in 2015. This book is about the day of the dead and shows pictures of skeletons performing funny activities. His drawing became famous because of his skeletons doing multiple everyday activities. The poses soon had then became identified with the day of the dead which is what is pictured in this book.

Funny Bones is a nonfiction book written by Duncan Tonatiuh. This book tells the story of calaveras. It is very informational especially to someone who is not of that culture. This story is important but long, I would not read it to very young children because they would not catch on. In the back of the book a lot of resources to learn more.

Nonfiction. This is a wonderful story for a classroom, especially if you plan on observing or learning about Dia fe Muertos. It‘s informational but feels like a story and looks like a picture book, making it a great read aloud story or a story for individual reading.

Funny Bones: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras by Duncan Tonatiuh, 2015. This is a wonderful nonfiction story because it feels like a story but it‘s also telling the history of the Calaveras and Dia de Muertos. The fun illustrations alongside Posadas original works make the story engaging and the story itself is very interesting and informative.

Can‘t vouch for these books, but they seem quite interesting. I think I‘m going to look for these so I can share them with my stepson. I figure I should try to teach him a bit about my culture and what better way than with books. For those of you trying to introduce kids to a bit of Mexican culture these books may be a good start. #diversebooks

#DayofTheDead #DiaDeLosMuertos This is our current library display in the children's area, with a few new books ( not pictured bc they are on the two bottom shelves) that we needed to update our collection! I got to help pick some of the new books, and the first one I have read was Funny Bones- my favorite part of the book( other than the story) is the artwork! @Litsy #AllHallowsRead
