Away
Away | Jane Urquhart
10 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
A stunning, evocative novel set in Ireland and Canada, Away traces a familys complex and layered past. The narrative unfolds with shimmering clarity, and takes us from the harsh northern Irish coast in the 1840s to the quarantine stations at Grosse Isle and the barely hospitable land of the Canadian Shield; from the flourishing town of Port Hope to the flooded streets of Montreal; from Ottawa at the time of Confederation to a large-windowed house at the edge of a Great Lake during the present day. Graceful and moving, Away unites the personal and the political as it explores the most private, often darkest corners of our emotions where the things that root us to ourselves endure. Powerful, intricate, lyrical, Away is an unforgettable novel.

My #bookreport

?A Great Deliverance - listening to the first volume in the Inspector Lynley series
?Hagitude - my "workish" listen (This will take me forever ?)

BarbaraBB Did you enjoy the Urquhart? I loved her 3mo
merelybookish @BarbaraBB I'm not done yet (I guess I should have indicated they are all in progress) but yes, I am enjoying it. Very lyrical but not so poetic that I'm losing the story! 3mo
BarbaraBB I am looking forward to your review! 3mo

This book. I just finished it, so I don't really have words to describe it yet. Poetic, atmospheric, beautiful. I've read Urquhart before but this one was different - maybe it's one of those books that found me at the right time. For me, this will be a classic of #canlit

Miss_Kim That's so beautiful! 💖💖💖 6y

Stealing some quiet time while everyone else does other things to read and cuddle with the step-dogs (a picture of two tiny poodles + book is beyond my photography skills, but there's another on my lap). I hope everyone has very happy holidays, and that you take enough time for yourself if these days are hard for you ❤

Melissa_J I loved that book! 6y
llwheeler @Melissa_J it's sooo good, I am loving it so far!! Just finished part 1. It's sat on my shelf for so long, i can't believe i haven't read it sooner. 6y

Normally I ignore the buy-this-book buzzwords on book covers, because let's face it they're usually the same or exaggerated or both. But 40 pages into this, honestly the top words to describe it that come to mind are stunning, evocative. Wow. This writing. (And good job, copy writer).

This book brings me very close to finishing #litsyatoz and helps me climb higher on #mountTBR. At first, I did not think I would like this book. I probably would never have grabbed it from my TBR had I not needed a book for "U." It started slowly, and then slowly I was pulled into the story. The author wrote some truly lovely passages.

Bibliogeekery I love this book! 7y
Melkyl @Bibliogeekery I did too. It kind of surprised me, because I did not know anything about it. I honestly don't even know how it came to be on my TBR shelf. I must have picked it up at a book sale. 7y

I finally finished a book! And what an annoying book, at that. I've had enough of romantic and weak women for quite some time now.

MrBook I don't usually read romance. Are there any books in the genre with strong women characters? 8y

The men in this book build things, create a life for themselves, are industrious. The women fall in love with ideas of men and then go around day-dreaming, being annoyingly "quaint" and poetic. Not so sure I like it ?

I'm completely unable to read, can't focus on any of the books I've been reading, so I naturally decided to try yet another book.

Still my favourite Irish/Canadian novel: Away by Jane Urquhart. Lovely blend of immigration story and magic realism.
