Shock Value
Shock Value: A Tasteful Book about Bad Taste | John Waters
6 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
"To me, bad taste is what entertainment is all about. If someone vomits watching one of my films, it's like getting a standing ovation." Thus begins John Waters's autobiography. And what a story it is. Opening with his upbringing in Baltimore ("Charm City" as dubbed by the tourist board; the "hairdo capital of the world" as dubbed by Waters), it covers his friendship with his muse and leading lady, Divine, detailed accounts of how Waters made his first movies, stories of the circle of friends/actors he used in these films, and finally the "sort-of fame" he achieves in America. Complementing the text are dozens of fabulous old photographs of Waters and crew. Here is a true love letter from a legendary filmmaker to his friends, family, and fans.

#sundayfunday @BookmarkTavern

I'm not too picky, so long as there are lots of them. Multiple shelves' worth. John Waters said it best: "If you go home with somebody and they don't have books, don't f*** them...Nothing is more important than an unread library. Life is nothing if you're not obsessed." ??

BookmarkTavern I love that quote! Thanks for sharing! 5mo

Discovered that the library system one county over does not have a ratings cap on DVDs like ours does so I‘m finding all kinds of gems there. Watching this one now.

I saw John Waters speak in DC during one of his book tours a few years ago and I gotta say...once in a lifetime event.

#cultclassic #johnwaters #divine

DivineDiana I‘m originally from Baltimore, so of course I am a fan of John Waters and the late and fabulous Divine! 5y
SkeletonKey @DivineDiana - Excellent!! I do enjoy Baltimore. 5y
kalinichta I often remember something he said in "This Filthy World": "If you go home with somebody, and they don't have any books, don't fuck 'em!" 5y
SkeletonKey @kalinichta - That‘s my favorite quote from him I think 😆 5y

RealBooks4ever My daughter went to see John Waters on Feb 14! She‘s a big fan but was a little disappointed that he used some of the same material he used last time he came through Portland. What did you think of his show? 6y

Leftcoastzen I liked it a lot . I had seen him many years ago at a Book event , fun to hear him riff on the history. 6y
DivineDiana As I‘m Baltimore born and bred, I have a soft spot in my heart for John Waters. Have not had the pleasure of hearing a prepared lecture, but I did exchange some comments with him at a Baltimore nightclub a long time ago! 6y

The 3rd bookstore of the day was Value Village, which is actually just another secondhand store... but a go to for books. Definitely pricier than SuperThrift and Sally Anne, but worth it for certain books. @TricksyTails

Texreader Are all these stores in your hometown? You are so lucky!!! 6y
Clwojick @TexReader they are all across the street from each other. We have a bunch more, but I always hit up these four on the same day because they're like a 3 min walk from each other. 😂💸💸💸 6y
TricksyTails Look at all that Stephen King! 😍 So lucky!! 6y

InLibrisVeritas Your Value Village is so nice compared to the one we have here. Ours looks like someone ransacks the place every night 6y

Today's theme has made me realize that it's been awhile since I've read a truly great memoir. Most recent read on this pile is from January 2014. #memorablememoirs #booktober
