Murder in the Bastille
Murder in the Bastille | Cara Black
9 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
Parisian P.I. Aime Leduc is attacked and blinded during an investigation. Can she solve her case without her sightand when her own life is in danger? Parisian private investigator Aime Leduc is all dressed up in her new Chinese silk jacket, supposedly a designers exclusive, for dinner with a difficult client at an elegant restaurant in the Bastille district. She is chagrined to see that the woman seated at the very next table is wearing an identical jacket. When the woman leaves her cell phone on the table, Aime follows her to return it and is attacked in the shadowy Passage Boule Blanche. When she regains consciousness, Aime finds that she is blind. Nevertheless, she is told she is lucky; the woman she was following was found in the next passage, murdered. Aime is determined to identify her attacker. Was he actually a serial killer targeting showy blondes, as the police insist? Was he really after the other woman? Or was Aime his intended victim? From the Trade Paperback edition.

Not quite Neon Pink @kezzlou85 but the closest I‘ve got.

As part of the I Spy game I‘m tagging @Tove_Reads @Lizpixie and @Velvetfur to post a book with an orange cover.

Velvetfur Thanks for the tag! Oohh, orange.... I'll see what I've got 😊 4y
kezzlou85 My daughter said that works. It's a cool cover. 4y

3⭐ this one was better than previous. Aimee finds herself unable to see, so Rene must help her solve the crime.

On to the next book!

EadieB I liked this one too! 4y
gradcat I love the cover on yours! Mine don‘t look like this. I‘m glad you liked this one better...I‘m beginning to feel guilty because these books came from one of my posts—yikes! 😬 4y
Crazeedi @gradcat I read an ebook, so this cover is just one from goodreads 🙄 4y

gradcat Ah! Okay, that explains it! 4y
Andrew65 I‘d agree. No need to stress @gradcat 4y

Crazeedi @MrBook thank you and ditto!!💞 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 Thank you, & Phew 😅! 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat 😂😂 Happy overall with the series, not helped with the first book that I just loved. Hard to keep up to that standard. 4y

Finally finishing this book, then on to 'The Salt Road' for #LMPBC. I have 2 other books to work on too!

Andrew65 What are your thoughts on it? 4y
MrBook 😁👏🏻👏🏻🤗 4y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I said a bit on another post. Liked better than last one, rather disconcerting she's blind, I think theres a bit too much describing places, etc, a bit wordy maybe? Not sure if that's what I mean. I guess maybe extraneous 4y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Yes that slowed down the flow and pace a bit. 4y

Mehso-so

This one was somewhere between so-so & a pick for me & was much better than the last Aimee LeDuc instalment. An interesting dynamic with Aimee being blinded as a result of an attack, & good to see how she did or didn‘t cope with this. Also good to find out more about her past & her business partner. I would have rated this as a pick but for what seemed a rushed/sudden ending. A bit more detail at this end of the book would have improved it.

Andrew65 Onto book 5, let‘s hope this keeps up the improvement. #AimeeLeducBuddyRead #CaraBlackBuddyRead 4y
EadieB Yes I‘m looking forward to the next book too! Nice review! 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, hopefully the series will continue to improve from this point. 4y

Crazeedi Will be finishing this weekend 4y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Look forward to hearing your views. 4y
gradcat Reading all of your reviews makes me feel that I‘m not harsh enough! I think you & @EadieB we‘re both correct to put this one in the so-so category. I never use that category...not sure why, but I think it‘s apt here. Good review! 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat Thanks. It‘s a category I don‘t use that often, tend to use this if my rating was around 3 or lower. I wish there was a category above Pick for those special books. I rarely pan a book, think possibly only done it once this year and read over 200 books. Often find people are harsher than me with the pan button. Very rare for me not to finish a book. (edited) 4y

Aimee is attacked in the shadowy Passage Boule Blanche. She regains consciousness, Aimée finds that she is blind. She is determined to identify her attacker. Is he a serial killer or was Aimee his intended target? I find Aimee and her interest in designer clothing to be an interesting person and Rene, her computer genius, rather unique. This book had a very slow pace but was a great way to show us how to deal with disabilities like loss of sight.

EadieB She needs to get back to some of the history of Paris and it's atmosphere that make these books a great location for a murder mystery. I look forward to reading the next in the series and recommend this books to those who love Paris. #MurderinBastille #CaraBlack 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 Thanks! 4y
Crazeedi Nice review. I'm finishing my book this week! 4y
EadieB @Crazeedi Let me know how you like it. 5 books have been mailed to you so far so you should receive them soon! (edited) 4y
Crazeedi @EadieB oh wow so awesome!! 4y
EadieB @Crazeedi They are used books but should still be readable! 4y
Crazeedi @EadieB I get used ones all the time, it's just fine and so thoughtful of you 4y
EadieB @Crazeedi Early for your birthday but best to get them before someone else orders them! 4y
gradcat I think you‘re spot on about her need to remain focused on the Parisian atmosphere. That‘s what makes her books good, in my opinion. How are you? Sinus problems abated, or worse? I hope you‘re feeling better now. ♥️ 4y
EadieB @gradcat Still having sinus problems so will have to go back to doctor before I leave on trip to Puerto Vallarta Mexico the last week of November as I don't want to be sick while there. 4y
gradcat You guys travel a LOT!! I hope you have a great time there! (Maybe it will help your sinuses, too...you never know!) 🏖 🏝 4y
EadieB @gradcat I do hope it helps my sinuses and my cough. Looking forward to the first frost too. I think that will kill off a lot of ragweed! 4y
gradcat @EadieB That shouldn‘t be too far off for you guys up north, right? 4y
EadieB @gradcat Started out 32 this morning and Sunday will be low of 28. 4y
gradcat @EadieB There it is—winter!! 😂 4y

Aimée LeDuc, Book 4
A better-than-average detective novel set in Paris, this venture finds our heroine blinded owing to a bruising attack in the 11th Arrondissement, where the Bastille is located. Beginning with the 2nd book in the series, we learn a bit more about Aimée‘s father, mother, and business partner (in that order). I enjoyed learning more about what makes the faithful René tick, as he has to “fill in” for Aimée when she loses her ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont) eyesight, and thus is front and center for a good portion of this book. All in all, an enjoyable read, if not quite a perfect one—the ending left me a bit nonplussed—it seemed as if the book just ended rather perfunctorily, in my opinion. I was left a bit puzzled about exactly how everything went down, but that may have been my fault. Nevertheless, it shouldn‘t happen. ♥️ (edited) 4y

squirrelbrain Work is still a bit much, but otherwise good! How about you? 😘 4y
gradcat @squirrelbrain Sorry your work is still a bugbear, but I‘m happy to know you are otherwise okay. I‘m doing okay, too. I‘ve got a couple of issues that are getting in the way of my reading/Litsy time, but hopefully all of that is getting ironed out. Anyway, I‘m striving to make an effort, because the holidays are very festive on Litsy, I find. Can‘t wait to begin a Xmas swap, or something like that! ♥️ 4y
EadieB @gradcat I like your review and will write mine soon. How do you do a Christmas swap? 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat I felt the same way when it ended. I was listening on audiobook and that was like it? Want to listen to the end section again in case I missed anything. Felt this was a lot better than book 3. 4y
squirrelbrain Sorry to hear you‘ve got a few issues - hopefully they will be sorted soon. Yes, a Christmas swap is always something to look forward to! ❤️📚 4y
gradcat @EadieB You know, I‘ve never hosted a swap, but I‘ve participated in a couple. I think you have to be on top of matching people up, and then making sure they all follow through. I‘m to scared to host one!! But I love doing them. Have you ever participated in any of them? Oh, and thank you very much for complimenting my review! ♥️ (edited) 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 I know, right!?! I do feel like each book improves on the last, but I really felt like the ending just kind of left things to the reader to deduce. How are you doing—feeling any better? 4y

I‘m a bit behind with this one. Hopefully I‘ll finish tomorrow. I am once again “enjoying” vitamin D deficiency, which means I‘m super tired at all times ☹️

EadieB @Tove_Reads Did you get tested? Did you take more Vitamin D? 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Yes, on Monday. Half of what I should have in my blood ☹️ 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads That's how they found my parathyroid problem because my calcium and Vitamin D was off. I had to have one of my parathyroids removed. 4y

Andrew65 That‘s not fun @Tove_Reads or @EadieB I‘ve finished this one now and hoping to read the latest Maeve Kerrigan book this weekend. 4y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I‘ll pick it up on Saturday and will start reading it then. @EadieB 4y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Did you enjoy this book? I wasn‘t impressed 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
gradcat @Tove_Reads You didn‘t like it? I‘m really sorry about that. I know I‘m in the minority here, but I find myself liking them more and more all the time. Also, I‘m sorry that you‘re not feeling well. I know it‘s not fun to have that parathyroid problem, either, @EadieB ... I have a very good friend who had to have that surgery (in fact, two of my friends had this problem) and I remember it well. How are you doing, @Andrew65 — feeling any better? 4y
Andrew65 No neither was I, I gave it a generous 2.5 stars. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Starting this one now. Sorry to see you were not too impressed. @Tove_Reads @gradcat I‘m getting a good start on #24B4Monday #Readathon (edited) 4y
Crazeedi @Tove_Reads my Dr. tells me most people who live in areas that arent in tropics are vitamin D deficient. Some are like you and have symptoms, but he said many many are affected and dont realize. I'm taking D3 supplement 4y
Tove_Reads @Crazeedi Most Finns take supplements because of the lack of sun, but my body doesn‘t absorb D supplement well. Trying yet another one to see if this one will work. 4y
Crazeedi @Tove_Reads I hope it works for you❤ 4y

gradcat @Andrew65 @EadieB @Tove_Reads @Crazeedi I‘ve started early as well, because I‘m (sort of) caught up in other areas of my life ? I‘m loving this one because we‘re getting insight into René‘s life. 4y
