Murder Road
Murder Road | Simone St. James
A young couple find themselves haunted by a string of gruesome murders committed along an old deserted road in this terrifying new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Cold Cases. July 1995. April and Eddie have taken a wrong turn. Theyre looking for the small resort town where they plan to spend their honeymoon. When they spot what appears to a lone hitchhiker along the deserted road, they stop to help. But not long after the hitchiker gets into their car, they see the blood seeping from her jacket and a truck barreling down Atticus Line after them. When the hitchhiker dies at the local hospital, April and Eddie find themselves in the crosshairs of the Coldlake Falls police. Unexplained murders have been happening along Atticus Line for years and the cops finally have two witnesses who easily become their only suspects. As April and Eddie start to dig into the history of the town and that horrible stretch of road to clear their names, they soon learn that there is something supernatural at work, something that could not only tear the town and its dark secrets apart, but take April and Eddie down with it all.

I won‘t say much about this because I know a ton of you love reading her books with @TheBookHippie . (Join her this summer!) I will say supernatural thrillers aren‘t usually my genre, but St. James does them so well, I can‘t help but read them. This is one of her best, imo!

TheBookHippie Oh good. We‘ve read all of her books together and they‘re so fun to group read. I can‘t wait. 3d

The atmosphere was prime. Creepy and intense. Most of the characters felt true; however, one central character felt inconsistent. There were many various threads in this story and a few too many unanswered questions but it was still an excellent read.

This was a solid supernatural mystery. A couple gets lost on their honeymoon, stops to help a stranger who is injured and falls into a decades old mystery. It was a touch predictable, but I still enjoyed the journey. 3.5⭐️

Needing a mental rinse after the Cavanagh book (I was stuck somewhere yesterday for over an hour & had no other book to read lol), I saw @hooked_on_books positive review of the latest St. James & decided to give it a go. It does not disappoint. This is the third St. James that I have read & is my second favorite. Set in '95 (as a Gen X-er, this is catnip) newlyweds Alice & Eddie are on their way to their honeymoon when they pick up a (CONT)

vivastory visibly distressed hitchhiker. They take the hitchhiker to a local hospital & she soon dies. They quickly become suspects in a murder investigation & realize that the stretch of road where they picked up the hitchhiker has had many murders spanning decades & the police don't seem to be interested in solving the cases. I thought that this book was fantastic. Both of the leads: Alice & Eddie were on equal footing, but St. James did a great job (CONT 1mo
vivastory showing that although they stand up for their principles, neither Alice or Eddie are Mary Sue characters. Also, this book had some great side characters with a pair of siblings that I would love to see in a future St. James work. 1mo

I went in bling on this one, so I won‘t comment on the plot, but I‘m pretty sure St James fans will not be disappointed! I couldn‘t stop listening, finding this completely riveting. It bogged down a little in one spot, but was smooth sailing for the rest. An excellent entry to her cannon!

I was flying through this book, and I read it in only half a day because I could not put it down. It was so fun, and there was never a dull moment, I was constantly flipping the pages. Kept me intrigued 100% of the time. I could see this book actually playing out like a movie in my head. I just loved everything about this book. There were some things kind of left in the balance, but I was okay with that. Not every mystery is a perfect bow. 5/5

I read this for book club & I loved it! I‘m a huge fan of the author‘s work bc you know about the supernatural elements ahead of time which makes the story even more enjoyable. Some of it was predictable to me, but that didn‘t take away from the story. The short chapters really build the suspense. I‘m excited for the discussion for this one!

I have really enjoyed some of this author's previous books and while this one was still entertaining I found the supernatural element a little heavier in this book and a little too much for my tastes. I enjoyed both the main and side characters (especially Rose) and the mystery, but was somewhat disappointed in the resolution. That being said, I finished it in two days, so it was an easy read and held my interest. Thank you to NetGalley! 3.5/5!

St. James's specialty are fast-paced stories about ghosts and murder. In MR, she does not disappoint. April and Eddie, two newlyweds on their honeymoon, find themselves on a deserted, spooky road--aka Janet Leigh's character in PSYCHO--where they pick up a bloody hitchhiker and take her to the nearest hospital. All hell breaks loose from there, and April and Eddie are on the run to solve a murder in order to free themselves from local suspicion.

mcctrish I‘m on hold at two libraries for this and I‘m torn cuz maybe I need to own it. I‘m a total scaredy cat reader but I love St. James so much 2mo

4⭐️ read this one in 2 days- so proud of myself for ignoring ALL responsibilities while the toddler slept so I could devour this book. Supernatural thriller with a perfect amount of spooky. The Carters are on their honeymoon & find themselves on a deserted stretch of road where they find a hitchhiker and offer her a lift. All hell breaks loose and they become murder suspects who can‘t leave town, so they decide to solve the case on their own.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ St. James is a creepy ghost story master, but this backstory bothered me: recurring mention of Eddie fighting in Iraq. This takes place in 1995! And it‘s clearly not referencing the Gulf War. And all actual 90s references felt forced. It should‘ve just been set more recently. These details were so distracting as Eddie and April worked the mystery of the “Lost Girl.” Overall, pretty mid for one of my most anticipated books of 2024. #BOTM

KathyWheeler Operation Desert Shield/ Desert Storm was 1990-1991. Maybe I‘m missing something but it seemed like they were talking about the Gulf War to me. (edited) 2mo
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler Right, but the book only mentioned Iraq, and repeatedly. If it had said Desert Shield or Desert Storm, that would‘ve made sense, but it didn‘t. Once, it even referenced a 14-month deployment. That conflict was not that long and certainly deployments were not 14 months at that time. My husband served in Iraq 3x so it just bothered me that the references didn‘t add up. 2mo
KathyWheeler @britt_brooke ok. That makes sense. 2mo

April & Eddie are newlyweds driving on their way to a resort at Lake Michigan for their honeymoon when they see a hitchhiker on a lonely stretch of road just outside Coldlake Falls. The young woman seems reluctant to accept help but eventually she gets in the car. Once in the car, April & Eddie realise something is very wrong & the young woman has been stabbed. Suddenly headlights appear behind them & the woman says “I'm sorry, he's coming.“

OutsmartYourShelf 'The Sun Down Motel' & 'The Broken Girls' by the author were 5 star reads for me, unfortunately this one is more like 'The Book of Cold Cases' which I found only okay. I think for me, the problem was that the main characters were just not that interesting - side characters such as Rose (the bed & breakfast owner) & the Snell sisters were much more intriguing. 2mo
OutsmartYourShelf None of the twists were really a surprise & the haunting aspect (there's always a supernatural aspect with this author's books which usually works really well) felt quite flat to me. It is still a good read but in my view it doesn't live up to the author's best works. A slightly disappointing 3.5🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Penguin Random House/Michael Joseph, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Andrew65 A must read, as are all of her books. 👏👏👏🎉

Another page-turner from Simone St. James that did not disappoint.
Someone is killing hitchhikers along a road called Atticus Line.

You know that old urban legend: a boy driving down a lonely, country road, sees a girl, gives her a ride. She‘s cold so he gives her his letterman‘s jacket, drops her off. Next day he realizes she still has his jacket, goes back…it‘s a cemetery…and his jacket is hanging over a tombstone. 😧🪦 😬
Yeah, different story … but it‘s the same road, man.
Freaking, do not go down this road.

CaramelLunacy This definitely put me in mind of Seanan McGuire's Ghostroads trilogy centred around similar urban legends 2mo

This is another fabulous ghost story from the queen of ghost mysteries. She makes ghosts palatable for someone, like me, who doesn‘t typically like the paranormal. This totally gave me some Jeepers Creepers vibes in the beginning. So creepy, the atmosphere she sets is top-notch. The characters are believable and the ending was really satisfying. The narration by Brittany Pressley was absolutely fantastic…she‘s my all-time fav.

Oh my God, this book is so good! I think it‘s one of Simone St. James‘ best, ever. It is scary as hell, but also a really good detective story, a good mystery. I love April and Eddie. They are the most flawed protagonists imaginable, but they are also so very likable. Murder, serial killer, of a sort, ghosts, haunted locations, found family, again, of a sort.
