Almost Astronauts
Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream | Tanya Lee Stone
17 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
What does it take to be an astronaut? Excellence at flying, courage, intelligence, resistance to stress, top physical shape any checklist would include these. But when America created NASA in 1958, there was another unspoken rule: you had to be a man. Here is the tale of thirteen women who proved that they were not only as tough as the toughest man but also brave enough to challenge the government. They were blocked by prejudice, jealousy, and the scrawled note of one of the most powerful men in Washington. But even though the Mercury 13 women did not make it into space, they did not lose, for their example empowered young women to take their place in the sky, piloting jets and commanding space capsules. ALMOST ASTRONAUTS is the story of thirteen true pioneers of the space age.

This was a super inspiring book! I feel like we always hear about the male astronauts and they get all the glory, but this book highlights the females! It is so great to see and I would love to have this in my classroom.

I think this would be a good book for students to read so they can learn more about the struggles women used to go through.

Published in 2009, this biography of women who dared to dream was inspiring and accurate in the story of women working with NASA. Not only was this book providing the journey for these women, but also providing information on the trip, the prep, and so much more! Such an inspiring and captivating story for children to dive into!

Tanya Lee Stone won the 2010 Sibert Award for this amazing NF book, that could be used as an IR. In 1958, there was an unspoken rule: astronauts were male AND white. This book is about 13 women who striped to prove everyone wrong and even challenge the government. This book is a truly inspirational one and a great book to have in the classroom.
http://www.tanyastone.com/assets/files/AA%20Reading%20Guide.pdf includes many great resources like

alyssahp comprehensive questions and activities on specific subjects. It also includes standards as well. Both UDL 45 & EL 8.2 are met through the Social Studies project by having students use multiple resources of research that were used in the 50's and 60's then creating a venn diagram to compare what they found. A bit of a side note, but I made a text-to-text connection with Hidden Figures! #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y
DrSpalding Excellent choice! Hidden figures is a fabulous book and movie. I did not make the text to text connection. Thank you for helping me make it! 7y

Last week's rereading for my Sibert Medal class. Not only a book about 13 brave women but a book about WHY their attempts mattered. Hand this to the budding feminists in your life.
