2013 Caldecott Honor Book. From New York Times bestselling author Toni Buzzeo and Caldecott Medal winning illustrator David Small, comes a cool tale about an unlikely friendship. On a spontaneous visit to the aquarium, straight-laced and proper Elliot discovers his dream pet: a penguin. When he asks his father if he may have one (please and thank you), his father says yes. Elliot should have realized that Dad was probably thinking of a toy penguin, not a real one Clever illustrations and a wild surprise ending make this sly, silly tale a kid-pleaser from start to finish.

Caldecott Honor book. This a wonderful book about a kid wanting a penguin for a pet. This book tells a story using the dialogue from the dad and the kid. It flows easily and is a quick read.

One cool friend is a cute book that also has super cute illustrations to go along with it. The kids can also see ways to research information!

One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo was written in 2012 and is a Caldecott Honor book. I loved this book. It Elliot is such a lovable character as well as Magellan. It was fun following along with their adventures. I think children would really love this book and would make them want to steal an animal home! I think the story had a good plot and development. I would love to have this book in my classroom, I also LOVE penguins.

“May I please have a penguin? “Sure” his father said! “That‘s very kind” and he headed off. Elliot emptied his backpack, selected the smallest penguin and popped it inside”

This book kept my attention and made me laugh the whole time. I love the way his father seemed so oblivious to the idea that there was a real penguin in his house and not a stuffed one!

“One Cool Friend” was a charming, funny, adorable, and hilarious book all in one! One of my most favorite children‘s books I have read! This book dives deep into the imaginations of children and what they would want to do if they saw their favorite animal at the zoo! They always want to take it home with them!

“Elliot and Magellan rode to the library. When Elliot set him on the librarian‘s desk, Magellan held completely still. Me. Stan Riffe didn‘t blink an eye— even when Magellan blinked his.”

My favorite part of this book was how the little boy always dresses in a suit and bow tie, while the father dresses a lot more sloppy and laid back. I think kids can relate to this book because the little boy is the main “focus”.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The little boy‘s father agreed to letting him have a penguin, not realizing that it was an actual penguin.

This adorable book will be something I read to my students. They each can talk about their favorite animals from the zoos or aquariums.

One cool friend by Toni Buzzeo is a Caldecott winning book published in 2012. Elliot who is a very proper child who had gone to the aquarium with his father. Elliot was not very excited about going to the aquarium with all the screaming and gross kids his age. Until he found the penguins. Elliot made a home for his penguin that he stole from the aquarium. They were best friends and Elliot had taken care of his penguin, Magellan.

Caldecott honor book, 2012. Funny story about a boy at the zoo with his father and takes home a penguin. The dad isn‘t aware that he has a live penguin, so Elliot has to hide his new friend. Pictures are mainly black and white with pops of color throughout.

This quote also is so funny to me because I was not expecting the dad to agree and go along with his sons decision! So funny and cute!
Also the use of text bubbles and thought bubbles is so cool!!
