This historical fiction book that won the Newbery Award is a good book for independent reading after learning about the holocaust because the story goes through the life of Annemarie and what it was like during the invasion of the Germans. Annemarie‘s family helps some Jewish people get to safety in Sweden. I would use UDL 8.1 heighten salience of goals and objectives. I would use ESOL strategy 13 use preview/review activities.

The Giving Tree | Shel Silverstein

Pickpick

This is a poetry picture book about a female tree that gives everything a little boy wants as he grows up even though she is turning into a stump. She gives the boy everything she has until there is nothing left to give. This is a great guided reading book because it has a lesson in the story but children might not be able to understand that message so you as the teacher have to guide them to what the message might be.

Samantha.K The UDL I would use is 3.3 guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation. I would also use 2.3 support decoding of text, mathematical notation, and symbols. I would use the ESOL strategy number 17 provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language, and facial expressions. 6y

laurie_jayy Hey! I love that you said this would be a great GR because, depending on the grade, the students may not be able to understand the message it‘s conveying. 6y
MeganMc I also used this as my P books and it is my absolute favorite. I know so many students that would connect with it and really enjoy it. I like your UDL strategy because you would definitely need to decode the text since poetry is hard for students. 6y

This is a beautifully illustrated fiction PB that won the Caldecott Medal. This is about a train that goes to the North Pole. One boy that gets on the train doesn‘t believe that Santa is real so he doesn‘t get on at first. Then as the train pulls away he runs to get on. This is the perfect book for a read aloud around Christmas time. This book teaches you to always believe no matter what other people say.

Samantha.K The ESOL strategy I would use is 14 simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/polar-express-... this takes you to a lesson that has the students write new versions of the story. #ucflae3414f17 6y

This traditional literature picture book is a great story that has won the Golden Kite Award for picture book text. It‘s about a girl who goes to see her grandmother but encounters a sly wolf on her way there. This is a great book to use for a readers theatre because there are different characters they can play. The UDL I would use is 8.3 foster collaboration and community. The ESOL strategy I would use is 2 promote cooperation.

This fantasy book is such a good book that won the Newbery Award. I loved reading it. You go on a journey with this baby that had to be sacrificed to the “evil witch” that lives in the forest. The people in the protectorate believe that there is a witch that they keep away because of this sacrifice that happens every year to the youngest child in the protectorate.

Samantha.K The witch however takes the babies that are sacrificed through the forest to the other side to give to families that she believes is deserving of the child. But she feed the baby named Luna the moon and she gets filled with magic. This is a great book for a literature circle because students might need to discuss what is happening and what they thought was interesting or confusing with a small group instead of the whole class. (edited) 6y
Samantha.K The UDL I would use is 7.3 minimize threats and distractions. The ESOL strategy I would use is 2 promote cooperation. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Girl-Who-Drank-the-Moon-by-Kelly... this takes you to a lesson that gives you activities that the students can do in their small groups. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 6y

This fiction book was first introduced to me in I think 3th grade and I loved it because the boy makes up a different word for the pen. This book won the Young Reader‘s Choice. The teacher in the story tells everyone not to use the word frindle because it‘s not a word. You find out in the end that she only did that so the name would catch on, which it did. This would be a great book for independent reading because it‘s an easy read for students.

Samantha.K The UDL I would use is 6.4 enhance capacity for monitoring progress. The ESOL strategy I would use is 3 encourage self-talk. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/frindle-lesson... this is a great lesson plan because you are building up the book by making up your own word for something else. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 6y

These crayons are all over the world writing to their owner Duncan who has either used them to much or haven‘t used the color at all.
