Such a great book about firefighters! Some of the words are in Spanish and are bold within the text. Great source for EL students. In the back the bold Spanish words are list of the English translation. Very informational and very creative.

AJones Excellent idea! ELLs will love it and we are teaching a second language to our other students. Thanks for sharing. 😁 I just added this book to my stack. (edited) 6y

You Can Do It! | Tony Dungy

Pickpick

This NAACP Image award winning and B picture book by Tony Dungy and illustrated by Amy June Bates. Tony writes about his brother Linden who doesn't know what his IT is. The IT would determine what he dreamed about doing. His brother Tony and his family encourage him to have faith and his IT will come to him. This book definitely does center around religion so be careful when presenting this book but would be great for a IR.

Floribelg https://www.education.com/lesson-plan/asking-and-answering-questions/ the link is a lesson to use while teaching this book. UDL 9.1 promote expectations while they read this book independently. ESOL 3 promoting self talk should be encouraged while students read. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

This F picture book by Judy Schachner can be used as a RA, RT, and CR. This Siamese cat called Skippyjon Jones likes to imagine himself as other animals. In this book he took the role as a chihuahua and was now called El Skippito. Such an entertaining book with a opportunities to chorally sing and even has some Spanish words. This is only one of many books about Skippyjon Jones. In the link you can find a guide with other books and how to use in

Floribelg your classroom. There's even a RT and a poetry lesson. http://www.skippyjonjones.com/downloads/Skippyjon-CC.pdf it's necessary to use UDL 2.1 to clarify the vocabulary that's in Spanish and how some of the words aren't real words. ESOL 20 of listing the important words can be found in the link on how to create a word wall. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

Penguins! | Anne Schreiber

Pickpick

This NF book by Anne Schreiber is great for GR. The pages are full of information with all types of text features. You can easily teach text features while students learn about penguins and supports ESOL 12 by learning two objectives. Some of the pages features a joke about the penguins which I think students will love. There's even a picture glossary great for ELLs. While reading this book, most the information I

Floribelg remembered from watching March of the Penguins documentary. Just another resource to use to connect to the book. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/teaching-content/nonfiction-reading... the link provides multiple of nonfiction activities students can use to show their understanding supporting UDL 7.1 and 4.1 individual choice and vary options of response. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y
Samantha.K I love penguins. They are so cute especially when they are the little baby penguins. I should read this so I can learn more information that I might not know about penguins. 6y
MakennaK Penguins are my favorite animals lol! I would definitely use this book in a science lesson about penguins! 6y

This Newbery Award winning F novel book by Bill Brittain. Thaddeus Blinn who came into Coven Tree selling wishes when 4 individuals take the chance. Eventually 3 of the 4 individuals make a wish which does come true but doesn't meet their expectations. Ultimately they all learn a lesson from their wish. The book has a few illustrations that help the reader visualize what's occurring in the book. I think it'll make students think twice.

Floribelg The Wish Giver can be used as a SR and GR. http://takinggrades.com/SamplePages/WishSPgs.pdf the link is a test packet for pages throughout the book and could also be used to check for understanding. The test support UDL 6.5 monitoring progress. I would use ESOL 27 to use the special text features to connect to the meaning of the text. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

Rules | Cynthia Lord

Pickpick

Rules is a Newbery, Schneider Family and Dorthy Canfield Fisher award winning RF novel by Cynthia Lord. This novel can be used as a LC or SR. Catherine is a 12 year old with a brother (David) with autism wishing she had a normal life. The book captures a lot of raw moments Catherine, her mother, her father, and others encounter with their David. Throughout the book are rules that Catherine makes for David and rules even adults can learn from.

Floribelg I also liked how the book had references to other books that students may be interested to read. http://www.cynthialord.com/pdf/rules_discuss.pdf the link provides discussion questions from the authors website with included links to other useful resources; and can help UDL 3.1 supply background knowledge. Be aware to use ESOL 22 by giving time for students to answer the discussion questions. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y
EricaG This sounds like a great book, and I like that it has rules in it that we can all learn from! I also like that website includes different resources too. 6y

This F picture book by Leo Lionni is great for CR, PR, or RA. There are three selfish frogs who want to claim everything for only themselves. The link is a scholastic lesson plan that includes discussion topics, songs, and craft activities. Use UDL1.2 and 1.3 to offer visual and auditory options.

The Giver | Lois Lowry

The Giver is a Newbery award winning and SF novel by Lois Lowry. Jonas is living in a almost perfect futuristic world. The new path the Chief Elder has chosen for Jonas is one unlike others. He has to face receiving memories not known in his world. This book definitely made me appreciate individual expression. I would use this as a IR or LC https://www.scholastic.com/content/dam/teachers/activities/migrated-files-in-bod...

Floribelg The link is a scholastic reading guide with all types of resources to use while reading this book. I would suggest giving students the option to independent read this book or do a shared reading to support UDL 7.1 individual choice. While ESOL 50 would be help students continually check their own comprehension during their reading. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
laurie_jayy Hey! I like how you linked the IR and SR to the UDL which is something I never thought about doing! Those teacher strategies that you selected do in fact promote individual choice! Students get to choose what questions they want to use for a discussion among many other things. 6y
CaseyL This resource is amazing! The information and activities included in it are perfect for this book. I really liked this book but I would be cautious when using it in elementary school because of some of the mature topics. This is a great post and I think you really though about how to align UDL and EL strategies to the story. 6y

This Caldecott Honor book is a HF and B picture book written by Barb Rosenstock and Illustrated by Mary Grandpré. A RA would be necessary because the vocabulary is complex. Vasya Kandinsky is one the of the first abstract artist who didn't start off as an artist. As I was reading the book about this little Russian boy who always did the right thing. He didn't follow his passion because it wasn't proper. I was intrigued and then after reading

Floribelg The authors note about who Kandinsky was made the book more interesting. This HF Caldecott Honor picture book by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by E.B. Lewis would be great for a GR. This book takes place in the war time, early 1900s, when colored women were allowed to work while men were at war. Ada Ruth is a young girl who's mother goes to work and leaves her behind with her grandma. She has to anxiously wait; where they aren't able to hear from her and even though the days go by it doesn't get easier.

Freedom in Congo Square | Carole Boston Weatherford

This HF picture book by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by R. Gregory Christie is a Correta Scott King and Caldecott award winning. For all the right reasons so, the book pops of vibrant colors. The story is told in poetic form about how slaves counted down the day where they were able to celebrate the freedom they have. The book also contains a foreword and a authors note about the history behind Congo Square. What I took away from this

Floribelg that even if everyday is a struggle that it only takes one day to truly turn it all around. This book would be great to use as RA. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/book-report-alter... the resource is an alternative from a book report where kids can design their own cover page and supports UDL 5.1 because student have to use media to create their cover. During RA use ESOL 15 to reinforce freedom. (edited) 6y

The Three Pigs is a TL and Caldecott winning picture book written and illustrated by David Wiesner. This would be a fun book to do a DR and RT. Everyone knows the classic story about the Three Little Pigs, the wolf asked to come in but when the pigs say no, the wolf blew the houses down. He blew so hard the pigs flew out the page.
