Hawaii's Humpback Whales | Paul H. Forestell, Gregory Dean Kaufman

Pickpick

This book has a lot of succinct humpback whale information, + black and white and color photographs. It suited my purpose to prepare me for a whale watching tour perfectly. It was published in the 1990s so I don‘t know that I would necessarily recommend it as I‘m sure there are other books with more updated research.
I took this where we saw a mother and calf near Lahaina, intending to take it with whales, but living in the moment won!

Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly is a powerful and heartfelt story about Iris, a deaf girl who connects with a lonely whale through sound and determination. It beautifully explores themes of belonging, communication, and perseverance. A moving, inclusive read that inspires empathy and celebrates finding your voice.

This #YANovel is set on a Scottish “ghost island” (meaning it‘s not on original maps), & opens with Fraser, his mute brother & newcomer Hayley, being thrust together on a stormy night— that in the morning washes up a dead whale & then a dead body not long after! Though predictable, I enjoyed the magic of the whales enough to overcome some of the mixed messages & unrealistic dialogue & characters. Fun audio performance with a great accent!

I read this book for a global reading challenge. I was deeply moved. Some parts were rough/odd, but by the end of the book, there is that sweet redemption and apology for jaded/hardened ways. I didn‘t expect to, but I cried and cried by the end. Beautiful visuals and connections with the ocean and spirits. I didn‘t like all of it but I am definitely glad to have read it. A beach read for me this week.

LapReader Australian kids study the movie at school. You might like it. I studied Once were Warriors at Uni too. It‘s a lot darker but very good if you want to learn more. 8mo
CordeliaGrey11 @LapReader I definitely will check out the movie! 8mo
Clare-Dragonfly I also watched the movie in school (college) and thought it was great. Better than the book—there was something about the book‘s writing style that I didn‘t like, though that was twenty years ago and I don‘t remember what that was! 8mo
CordeliaGrey11 @Clare-Dragonfly it is a little hard to follow the writing style! I can definitely see that. I look forward to checking out the movie 7mo
