Christmas for Keeps | Ryan Taylor, Joshua Harwood

Mehso-so

This is a second chance/forced proximity romance and it didn't work for me. Not a massive fan of second chance romances when I don't know the characters.

After reading out that this is a sequel so there was a book that dealt with their relationship and it's breakdown. Read that one first and it might be ok!

Asexual Fairy Tales | Elizabeth Hopkinson

Panpan

This is not an anthology of asexual fairy tales or even fairy tales reimagined with asexual people.

If I'm being kind, it could be more aro than ace but I'm not being kind because this book is offensive.

Most of the stories were about people avoiding unwanted marriage or avoiding or escaping sexual assault.

⬇️

PuddleJumper There is one story that involves raping a comotose woman but it's ok because they were together before she fell into a coma.

Throughout the different stories there was a ‘sex bad and disgusting‘ vibe and that people were virtuous for not wanting it. There are sex repulsed asexual people (and other people) and that's ok but not everyone that is ace thinks that.

PuddleJumper It does not represent asexuality at all. The stories didn't even include asexuality. It's very confusing and offensive. 5mo

Not Just For Christmas | J. J. Harper

I DNF‘ed this book when the author described a character as being addicted to antidepressants.

Fuck off. There is a difference between dependency and addiction. Even if you are dependent on antidepressants you don't go into a bathroom to take one and then come out acting like you're on MDMA.

Absolutely disgusting. If there needed to be a tragic addiction story line then there are plenty of actual addictive substances to pick from.

willaful Ugh. I hate how antidepressants are treated in media. People on tv pop them like they're tranquilizers. 5mo
PuddleJumper @willaful This is the first time I've come across it (luckily) it's so bizarre! 5mo

This was a big hit of dopamine. It's completely unrealistic and everyone is lovely and it works as a Christmas snowed in romance.

One point I didn't like - don't give cats milk!

I got this because it read free and festive. It's not bad. It's a fairly bland and quick cosy.

I did not like the writing style. It was too jumbled and meandering for me. I also didn't officially like Sebastian and since it's all from his POV that didn't help!

The main problem I had with this book was that I didn't buy the main couple. I didn't understand why they weren't together if they were in love.

PuddleJumper Everyone around then thought they were a couple, there wasn't an external factor keeping them apart, it wasn't because they were friends. At least make them stupid or something, have a reason.

There were also too many characters I didn't care about. This is a stand alone set in a shared universe. Maybe I needed to read the other books first.

TheAromaofBooks I read a book not long ago where they main characters just basically kept being like “if only we could be together!!!“ And I was like... you can??!?!?!? I was so confused about why they couldn't be, and it was never explained! 5mo

I expected this to be a holiday monster fucker book which it was but there was also a plot about saving the world from aliens. It didn‘t work for me.

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 5mo

A sweet gay awakening slow burn romance between two hockey players.

This is very hockey focused and got a bit technical at times. I enjoyed it. It added another dimension to the romance.

Homophobia in the NHL is mentioned but it never goes into much depth and nothing comes from it. It focuses on the sweet side of things and sidesteps the reality of being a gay sportsman.
