We think of the Vikings as a strictly Scandinavian phenomenon. But they went ALL over. And their descendants made big strides here in the US. OTOH, in their non-battle mode, they were farmers and traders. Herman covers a vast array of subjects and time periods. And details a zillion battles. ⬇️

BarbaraTheBibliophage The broad scope was both the best and worst about this book. I wanted more of so many topics. And about 1000 less battle descriptions. Herman is a scholar, but I wish he‘d narrowed his focus instead of over promising. For me, this was on the low end of “Pick.” 3y
AlaMich Battles are so boring to read about, IMO. 3y

Susanita I was astonished at every stop on my cruise in Northern Europe that the Vikings were mentioned. Scotland, Ireland, France. France! Seriously? It was so much Viking everywhere, by the time we got to Norway as the last stop, it was almost an afterthought. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Susanita Yes, they are everywhere. Russia, Italy, Iceland. Very culturally unique! 3y
Cinfhen Cool choice for prompt 🥰 3y

Pickpick

An incredibly powerful book (CW: it‘s Christian, if you can‘t tell from the title) written in the late 40s by a Black theologian and activist. It‘s short but meaty, naming many ways in which Black people have “their backs against the wall,” what Jesus and the Bible say, and naming and deconstructing diverse responses and actions. Excellent resource for a short group study.
