When a longtime elderly substitute is found quietly passed away in the faculty lounge in a Texas high school, it kicks off what is to become a year full of challenges. Through the eyes of teachers, administrators, and staff, we walk through the year‘s events, both personal and professional. Funny, touching, and very in-the-moment as we get a glimpse of teachers lives.

Oh! It‘s time for #TuesdayTunes.

I‘ve been fighting a cold, so I haven‘t felt like listening to anything too energetic or frenetic. Mellow vibes only. Ella Grace brings them. She lists “Sexuality, Identity, Spirituality and Mental Health” as the pillars of her album. I‘m into it.

Vibes here:

We have two little libraries on our 6th-12th grade campus. It was a senior project many years ago but still going strong. Seeing their colorful patterns and well-tousled books makes me smile. They are used and loved. My #BeautyBreak for today 😊

One of my teacher friends chose this for our IRL Book Club. An easy, quick-clip of a book with a full cast of characters and lots of heart. I don‘t think it‘ll inspire any *revelatory* discussions but I‘m sure my group will have plenty to say.

A dedicated sub & retired teacher dies on the couch in the faculty room during his break period. The staff reflects on his passing in earnest ways, with sentimentality and a dash of humor. 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: Illustrates the difference between a job & a vocation; provides a realistic critique of bureaucratic nonsense; gives readers a taste of juicy workplace drama. 2mo
monalyisha 2/2: Luce‘s section was hard to read under the current administration. It feels hopeless to reflect on what it would mean for her now to be undocumented. The punk rock prinicipal was kind of a dreamboat. I don‘t blame Kitty at all. Meow. 😽 2mo

Nightfall really has little worry for herself and her sole focus is Loid, which is certainly odd but pales to Yuri's almost borderline infatuation with his sister. Just when I thought he could be ok, he does something a little unhinged like in this volume's case he was able to pinpoint Yor from a scent and sound of her footprint... From her accent and sound of her footfall.
Like I know he's fictional but creeper.

Clever, tech‑driven YA mystery about a video that ruins reputations—even though it may be fake. High‑school rivalry, viral gossip, and shocking twists keep this page‑turner grounded in real‑world media weirdness. Compact, relevant, and suspenseful.

Happy to finally get the next volume from the library, full of the expected heartfelt moments and truly absurd humourous moments, with the unexpected gut punch of Mission 91, which really got me. Starting with an event for wounded veterans bringing a number of characters together, it got heavy and eloquent in a way that stunned me: turning an argument about who lost what in the war, who deserves respect and who should shut their mouth, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/3 into a discussion of suffering and empathy, of the great leveller of grief, of the ways that it manifests, among them rage, the idea of accepting responsibility, but also forgiveness. I'm left to wonder if there's a cultural context or personal history of the author/artist that is evolving his work, but regardless I'm glad he decided to share this chapter in particular.

Robotswithpersonality 3/3 Other highlights:
The handler admitting part of her latest visit in disguise is the desire to wear a nurse's uniform
Bond trying his best to metamorphose into different animals to impress a post-zoo-visit Anya
Character design for Grandpa Siggy + Anya finally catching a break when it comes to tutors

Popped over to beautiful Bruny Island for a couple of nights. Surprised to see so many tourists in the middle of winter.
They have 6 little libraries on the island, made by the Men's Shed. I've visited 5 and will swing by no.6 on the way to the ferry.

Cupcake12 This is lovely, we don‘t have many of these in the UK. 4mo

I run a book club at my library here in Texas, and most of the group is retired teachers. I thought this pick would give them lots to talk about. However, what I didn't realize was just how much I would love this one.

This book really is more of a character study, and each of these characters felt relatable and well fleshed out.

Mathieu delivers a poignant, heartfelt, humorous story that I think everyone should read. 💚
