One of my teacher friends chose this for our IRL Book Club. An easy, quick-clip of a book with a full cast of characters and lots of heart. I don‘t think it‘ll inspire any *revelatory* discussions but I‘m sure my group will have plenty to say.

A dedicated sub & retired teacher dies on the couch in the faculty room during his break period. The staff reflects on his passing in earnest ways, with sentimentality and a dash of humor. 👇🏻

I run a book club at my library here in Texas, and most of the group is retired teachers. I thought this pick would give them lots to talk about. However, what I didn't realize was just how much I would love this one.

This book really is more of a character study, and each of these characters felt relatable and well fleshed out.

Mathieu delivers a poignant, heartfelt, humorous story that I think everyone should read. 💚

A substitute teacher dies in the faculty lounge. The plot holds together a series of character studies about the people at a high school. Interesting characters and a fun set of circumstances. A little preachy with a few too many excursions into liberal opinions about the state of the education system. But an overall sense of teaching as an honorable and rewarding profession, an opinion we don‘t get to share much these days.

As a teacher, this sweet and realistic book made me feel heard (which is rare).

Humorous and meaningful, this behind the scenes look into the faculty of a high school is an absolute gem. It‘s a character study of various teachers and other faculty members, the struggles they face, and the reasons they return everyday (or not) to work. The constant thread of Mr. Lehrer‘s life and legacy was really exquisite. I loved it! 5 glowing stars!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The editing 🫠. It‘s this “into the crowed” and a consistent use of “Ms.” in reference to a male teacher that is indeed a “Mr.” in the book. This is a finished copy and is $28.99. The publisher is part of Penguin Random House, so money to pay an editor shouldn‘t be a problem. My English teacher eyes can‘t handle it 😵‍💫
