The #LitsyGoesPostalOG may be the oldest, largest & longest running postal book group on Litsy and we‘ve seen a lot of things happen, good and bad over the two years so far. One #propackingtip that I would like to share is to place an address card inside the bag that contains the book & journal you are shipping. That way, if the packaging gets mauled by machinery, bears, or whatever, the contents have a better chance of getting to the next person.

Daisey This is a great tip. I learned early on to package in a plastic bag, but I still sometimes forget to add an extra address in the bag. 6y
Wife Good to know! Thanks 🌹 6y

According to the USPS, they process & deliver 504.6 million mail pieces daily. That‘s 21.1 million mail pieces/hour or 361,656 mail pieces/minute.

But that doesn‘t mean all mail pieces arrive intact. Just because the shipping materials come from the post office doesn‘t mean the sorting machines won‘t mangle it or that the adhesive will stick...

When shipping, you may want to consider reinforcing the seams w/glue or tape.

Dogearedcopy Image is an actual Priority Mail envelope from the USPS received by one of our postal group readers. Names and addresses “photoshopped” out. 6y
Cupofjo I‘ve been double bagging in mail envelopes, and have even double boxed on occasion.. 6y
Dogearedcopy @Cupofjo As @PatriciaU can attest, I‘ve become a Gorilla Glue & Tape freak! 6y

PatriciaU I am rarely using anything other than sturdy boxes. Envelopes just don‘t seem to work. 6y
mariaku21 Padded mail envelopes are my go to! You can get free priority ones from any USPS location and online. 6y
KimM This image is an actual picture of what happened to one of our book and journal packages. After seeing this, I will be reinforcing. 👍🏻 6y

#propackingtip Sometimes a package gets lost or a member of a postal book group disappears with book(s) & journal(s). It‘s awful but it does happen. Some may write off the loss but in our group we try to recreate the package for the original sender. To that end, I actually take pictures of all my journal entries so that I can print them out or copy them if need be. I know others photocopy their journal entries or keep notes. #highlyrecommend

BibliophileMomma That‘s an awesome idea. #whodunitbymail #whodunitthesequel #litsyscreams peeps we should all probably do this. 6y
GatheringBooks oooh. good idea. yes. will be willing to do this. 6y

First, I bow down to @KimM and her amazing packing skills! She fit all of the above into a BOTM club box and then got the box into a 9.5” x 12.5” padded flat rate envelope!

And, of course, look at #allthethings! I‘m really looking forward to reading this over the weekend! 🙂

#propackingtip Wet weather conditions in various parts of the country/world can wreck havoc on your packages and the contents inside! You might want to think about wrapping the contents in plastic. I use ziplocks, taped plastic bags from the grocery or book stores, dry cleaning bags, whatever... And yes, I secure all the seams of the box with packing tape as well. I take package security very seriously! 😄

LibrarianJen That‘s actually a really good idea especially this time of year. I would hate for someone‘s book to get all soggy and ruined and grow mold and ☹️☹️☹️ 6y

#propackingtip The self adhesive strips on many mailers aren‘t as strong as you think! En route, your mailer can come open and contents spill out. Sometimes not everything gets put back! Reinforce the sealing flaps with packing tape. I actually use Gorilla Glue *and* Gorilla Packaging tape. I know it‘s overkill, but I‘m of the belief, “Better safe than sorry!” 😜
