Awesome book. I loved the pacing and short chapters, as it was easy to read a few in between a busy day. I definitely want to check out some more of Grisham‘s work

A woman was kidnapped and tortured but finally escaped; 2 others were abducted but ended up dead. If you like courtroom/ lawyer drama and twisty mystery, this is for you. Well written ❣️But I believe it‘s a new series I‘ve begun…

A preacher is found brutally murdered in a Tennessee motel room. A beautiful, mysterious young girl is accused. In this Mystery Readers International finalist for "Best Debut Mystery," criminal defense lawyer Joe Dillard has become jaded over the years as he's tried to balance his career against his conscience.

EadieB Savvy but cynical, Dillard wants to quit doing criminal defense, but he can't resist the chance to represent someone who might actually be innocent. His drug-addicted sister has just been released from prison and his mother is succumbing to Alzheimer's, but Dillard's commitment to the case never wavers despite the personal troubles and professional demands that threaten to destroy him. 4mo
EadieB This is book #1 in the Joe Dillard series. The book started out a little slow until about mid-way. It was a courtroom scene but I was not really into it. I'm looking forward to book #2 and hopefully it will be better than #1. This does look like a good series so I'm hoping that book #2 will be good. 4mo

Mehso-so

In between a pick and so-so. People have been raving about this book. At times it was good, but then it was suddenly all over the place, jumping from A to B to F. Also got very, very tired of everyone being bad. We get it, all the clients and victims are bad, bad, bad. I would have edited this book a lot. I liked the main plot and the family things, but otherwise it was too much to try to remember.

EadieB I didn‘t like this one too much either. The reviews were good but not for me! (edited) 5mo
Tove_Reads @eadieb Yes!!! And was up for awards and everything. Really got tired of some bits in the book. Don‘t know, could it be that it‘s the first book in the series, and it gets better or will the same style continue… 5mo
EadieB I was wondering the same thing. I might try the second book. 5mo

Vintage Grisham which had all the things I absolutely love about his book. Could only have been improved with a slightly more robust edit. I‘m ready for the sequel now.

I personally didn‘t love this book, but giving it a pick because I think I‘m biased. A friend recommended it because she though it gave good insight into how lawyers argue criminal cases and that she was fooled by the whodunnit, which is rare. As a lawyer (albeit not a criminal one), I tend to find books about legal process tedious. But this was a quick read and an otherwise compelling mystery.
