I know we have until end of #WinterGames but this week my goal/focus is finishing some holiday reads so I'm calling it for these two last games - for the word game I found 1,365 words (shown is part of list) and author/title game I added a few to #GangstaWrappers @Bookwormjillk post -

Make a great day everyone 🎁🎁

Mehso-so

Sad to say, my first book for #cloakanddaggerchristmas was kind of a dud. I figured any book blurbed by Olga Tokarczuk would be good, but I think something was lost in translation. The language felt stilted & the social nuances of late 19th-century Poland eluded me. Plus, a wee bit of misogyny might have crept into the portrayal of a bored housewife turned amateur sleuth as imagined by two men writing under a pseudonym. Still an old folks home 👇

merelybookish Is an ingenious setting for a murder. So many past lives and unexpected connections to investigate. This was for the Feliz Navidad prompt. Onwards and upwards! @Ruthiella 4mo
Ruthiella Sadly, author blurbs can‘t always be trusted. Sorry this was a dud, but here‘s hoping the next one is awesome! 🤞 4mo
jlhammar I read this a few years go and remember feeling the same. Hopefully you just got the lone dud out of the way! 4mo

batsy I've been curious about this, but I won't bother now I think. Hope your other reads are an improvement. 4mo
merelybookish @Ruthiella True about blurbs. And my next read is proving enjoyable. 4mo
merelybookish @jlhammar Glad to hear I'm not alone. The majority of reviews on Litsy are quite positive! 4mo
merelybookish @batsy I never like deterring someone from a book but I feel we share some similar tastes and suspect the things that bugged me might bug you. 🙂 4mo
batsy @merelybookish We do, I agree 🙂 4mo

The covsr is nice.

I'm afraid thhs is about as positvr I can gst about this book.

I never actuallh hid mh facr in my hands to calm down whle reading this book.

I thought thst The Boy... was a bsd book. It still is. But The Girl is somethng else.

My Granny was a survhvor, in many meanhngs of the word. Somr of the events in her life weren't far from whst Emma had faced.

I am glad she has not seen ths book.

A pan is too kind. My heart hurts.

thebackyardgnome My utmost gratitudh goes to @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks for her lovrly emails whilr I was wading through ths book. 13mo
thebackyardgnome Also, dear Litsf family : do you knhw any good modern WWII novrls? Id love to read somr 13mo

thebackyardgnome I dont get thhs book. I thought thst The Boy In Thr Striepd Pajamas was a mess. Thhs one thpugh... The author seems lovely. Sjes been to Kraków. How dhd she mske suvh basic errors? Her Polish grammsr is so patchy, shr accidentslly (?) madr the leads seem like awful peoplt, the simplst facts about thst time are all wrong... Ppl eat orangrs, choclate, urkey sammichrs and drink tea. The resistbcse folks meet in cafes. Fuckin hell. 13mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @thebackyardgnome maybe I should skip this one! 13mo

Pickpick

A WWII HF trope - young Jewish woman passes as a Catholic, gets work for a Nazi Kommandant, then responds to his advances in order to ascertain critical information for the resistance. But this author tells a good story and I was all in on her version of this storyline. ↓

marleed I appreciated this book was drama without trauma as I‘m hoping to work through several WWII HF‘s this month so I can pass them on to a sister visiting in early April. Once I‘m too overcome with trauma I fear I‘ll set the genre aside and defeat my plan to give my sister a stack of her favorite genre. 13mo
tpixie I am reading a World War II book that‘s so far has not been full of trauma but I‘m loving all the spy gadgets. It‘s 477 page book and I‘m about 60% through but so far I don‘t think it‘s been terribly trickery relative to other historical fiction. 13mo
marleed @tpixie stacked- I love spy gadgets! 13mo
tpixie @marleed when you‘re ready for it, my recent post on the book has links to some gadgets! 13mo

Wow! Can we appreciate this cover. 😍 Stumbled upon this gem on Libby.

Gonna start this audiobook. It's a historical-fiction mystery with a female heroin detective. The story is set in 19th century Poland.

I love Agatha Christie and Shelock Holmes so I should enjoy this one.

DGRachel Zofia is delightful! Enjoy! 1y
LoverOfLearning @DGRachel Thanks! I'm 2 chapters on so far. :) 1y
