#SpringSkies #AboutArt @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I am reading this book as a year-long read, 2 masterpieces per week. I‘m learning so much! Rick Steves writes in a very reader-friendly style, explaining why each piece is important. It‘s like a mini Art History class!

Eggs What a wonderful idea 🖼️ 2w
Desha Love this! 💗 2w
mabell Great idea! 2w
julieclair @Eggs @Desha @mabell Because I‘m reading the book so slowly, I think I‘m retaining more of the info than I would if I read it straight through. This old brain needs time for stuff to sink in, lol. 😂 2w
Eggs @julieclair I hear ya🤪 1w

In an effort to avoid an unwanted marriage, Celeste escapes into a blizzard, finding refuge in an abandoned manor with a very unusual Beast.

A very interesting, historical & Sapphic reinterpretation of Beauty & the Beast. I really liked the twist on the curse, & I liked all the characters. The relationship was really sweet. Pacing slowed down in the middle, the ending was unsatisfactory w/ loose threads, but overall an enjoyable read. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Sweet and charming middle grade graphic memoir. Santat writes about a life-changing trip to Europe in 1989, just before starting high school. He really manages to capture what being thirteen was like in all its awkward glory.

TieDyeDude So good! 4w
Caryl I thought this was a wonderful book. I love Dan Santat! 2w

Anyone have info on Beauvais France ? 🙃

Dilara I've been to Beauvais airport, if it counts 😂 This is the one low-cost airlines use instead of the more expensive ones closer to Paris. I've seen the cathedral from a distance, but I don't remember visiting it or the town itself, although I no doubt have, as a child, on a family outing from Paris.
It's a small town with a medieval heart surrounded by modern neighbourhoods, including quite a lot of social housing, 1-2 hours north of Paris.

Dilara It looks nice: https://www.aeroportparisbeauvais.com/en/tourism/translate-to-anglais-visiter-be... but it's probably not worth crossing the Atlantic for 😁. Although if you have a car, it could be a good base for visiting Amiens, Compiègne, Paris, and various small medieval cities.

TheBookHippie @Dilara Mr BookHippie has to travel there for work in about 10 months wondering if I should go 🙃 1mo

Dilara @TheBookHippie Oh you should definitely go then 😁
ETA: And when you've finished visiting Beauvais's historical center, you can drive to Chantilly ( https://chateaudechantilly.fr/en/ ) and the next day, to Compiègne and pretend you're Joséphine: https://chateaudecompiegne.fr/en/royal-and-imperial-palace. There's even a French/American museum close by! ( https://museefrancoamericain.fr/en )

TheBookHippie @Dilara thx so much!!! I‘m excited. I loathe to fly so it has to be worth it! (edited) 1mo
Dilara @TheBookHippie You're welcome! It occurred to me that a reader and a hippie might be interested in Ermenonville, the resting place of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the philosopher who inspired HD Thoreau and others.
https://www.chantilly-senlis-tourisme.com/en/the-destination/noteworthy-sites/le...
There is a park (w/ Rousseau's cabin), a castle & a Wild West theme park (I'd steer clear of it unless you love Spaghetti westerns!)

TheBookHippie @Dilara oh my word!!!!!! Yes yes yes!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ 1mo

TheBookHippie How fun! 1mo
Kitta Trainspotting is a fairly obvious suggestion but it‘s a tough read as it‘s in Scot‘s dialect! Ian rankin if you like crime, Iain Banks for speculative fiction, and How to be Both by Ali Smith or Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart for literary fiction! I used to live in Scotland and it was amazing. Have a great time! 1mo
Kitta Oh wait How to be both is just by a Scottish author not set in Scotland 😆 1mo

Europe in Autumn | Dave Hutchinson

This was a very strange book. Alt History, with Europe divided into many tiny states, and our hero a courier who crosses all the guarded boundaries to deliver people and things across borders. But there is another level of reality he's only so far gotten a glimpse of.

Addendum to this morning‘s Weekly Forecast post: I put a hold on this so long ago, I had completely forgotten it is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. 😅😅😅

Clare-Dragonfly I‘ve done similar! 😂 The cover and title with the retelling aspect definitely have me intrigued. 2mo

Heart warming, filled with great illustrations and an innocent first crush before high school. Really good read that I recommend highly.

Finished 3 of these this weekend! Thank you for the recommendation of Don't kiss the bride, it was quite a good book, though that cover is nightmare inducing!
