Grand Hotel Europa
Grand Hotel Europa | Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer
3 posts | 6 read | 2 reading | 3 to read

A man rents a room in a hotel to write the story of his lost love, Clio. As he writes about how they met and the relationship evolved, he also writes about the missing Caravaggio painting (I‘m not sure about the truthfulness in that) and travelers.

Most of this book feels like a input in a conversation about traveling and travelers, and then mostly tourists, but he also touches on immigrants. What are the impact of tourism? And the will to

AnneCecilie experience something authentic and how authentic is that experience? There are cities in Europe where almost all the citizens have moved out of the city because of tourists and what kind of cities are that, like Venice? What does it say about Europe that tourists come to visit art that was made several hundred years ago? This book left me a lot to think about. 11mo
Aimeesue Interesting questions! The whole tourist transformation is one reason I‘ve never really wanted to visit Hawaii, despite wanting to experience it. 😕 11mo
AnneCecilie @Aimeesue I thought so too, but I have never given it much thought. But then I mostly travel in Europe and especially Paris. 11mo
BarbaraBB It sounds super interesting. I should really read it. Tourism is getting out of control in European cities like Venice and Barcelona (and also Amsterdam) and I don‘t like it one bit 11mo
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB Barcelona and Amsterdam are some of the other cities he mentions. He doesn‘t come with any solutions, but does point out that tourism may not be the “savior” we all think it is. Even though tourism does bring in money, it also costs a lot, and money wise it may not add up. 11mo

I loved Pfeijffer's previous book, "La Superba", so I decided to read this one as soon as the Croatian translation was published. I did not regreat it even thought it has more than 550 pages. More a long essay on Europe's glorious pas and not so promising future then a novel. A part that I appreciate the most is a very lucid analysis of mass tourism and its impact on everyday life in European cities.

Book Nr 19 off my #BookSpinBingo board

Again, #unpopularopinion because I can't get why everybody's so fascinated by this book.

To me it's another disappointment. I was hoping for something like The Grand Budapest Hotel - how wrong I was!

Instead one get moral sermons by very dislikable characters, who think they're better than the rest of us because they're... Idk 🤷‍♀️ I couldn't stand any of them.
