Pickpick

This was recommended by one of our young readers, so I thought I‘d give it a go. As a grumpy old boot, it‘s a pick - but with BIG reservations.

Itchingham Lofte is a 14-year-old element hunter - he‘s trying to collect all of the elements in the periodic table. This can lead to problems (explosions, poisoning, being chased by international bad guy corporations, that sort of thing…)

Huge props for making chemistry and geology

rockpools exciting and edgy. I loved the idea. Itch is an awkward, obsessive teenage boy and, with his cousin and younger sister who are considerably more socially savvy, they do make great characters.

But (old grump bit ahead! I guess the OTT horror-movie-style greenhouse-vomiting bit was there for entertainment. The graphic descriptions of death and sick kids by radiation poisoning (vomiting every

rockpools other page) more about ramping up the tension. A warning about playing with ☢️ rocks? I don‘t know. I found it hugely uncomfortable - I guess the line between entertaining nonsense and real life consequences didn‘t sit in the best place for me.

I still love the idea, and may or may not give book 2 a chance.

I really enjoyed this book and Deborah Blake is quickly becoming one of my favorite witchy authors. In this book she discusses different ideas to add to our everyday routine plus ideas for the Sabbats and full moons.

I got this book because we are doing a homeschool unit study on the periodic table of elements and my son is obsessed with the topic. I saw Bill Gates recommended it so I thought I should read it. This is a very good summary of periodic table, but also the history of chemistry and the evolution of scientific thought and technology. It is narrative, but some places require a bit more brain power to understand. Not for bedtime reading.

The history of science is one of those subjects where I‘m always adding titles to my TBR because the descriptions are fascinating, but then am almost never motivated to actually go and read the books. #NovemberNarrative #ChemistryWeek @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

AnnR Another book I keep meaning to read. 1y

Thank you so much @DGRachel I feel so spoiled. I love the book choices and can't wait to start reading them. The oracle cards are gorgeous. I love my little quartz wizard, he's fantastic! The amethyst lights are amazing. The candle smells incredible. The pouch is cute and quite true. And Twix are my favorite. Thank you so much and have a Blessed Samhain 🧡

DGRachel I‘m so glad you are happy with it. I was so worried that I could hardly make decisions at my local shop. I‘m sure they thought I was crazy. 😅 1y
sprainedbrain Omg that wizard! All so gorgeous! 🖤 1y

My next read. No idea if it's spooky enough for October but it's what my 4 year old picked. To be honest it has a monster in it lol, I'm not complaining #Disney #disneyfrozen #elsa #anna #queens #elements #magic #snowqueen #enchantedforest #monster

Leaving through this book about the elements and vacuuming up random facts of pub quiz trivia.

Pennies in Bermuda have pigs on one side. I'm certainly going to need that information one day, I'm sure.

TrishB You never know. 1y
