Book Tok made me do it!! No regrets! 10/10, would buy again!!
A re-read before reading The House of Fortune. I very rarely re-read, but enjoyed this much more second time around. I seem to recall being underwhelmed previously (Goodreads tells me it was 2015). Nicely sinister, a bit creepy, a great historical setting and some strong women sorting things out. It‘s also really quite sad. However I‘m left with the slight annoyance that the “who is the Miniaturist?” question is not satisfactorily resolved.
Growing older does not seem to make you more certain. It simply presents you with more reasons for doubt.
This took a long time to get to the point. Not a lot of answers by the end. Pretty well written otherwise, I think the character development and anticipation of something big happening kept me from putting it down
#JanuaryJazz Day 19: This dollhouse is evidently store-bought, very precious, with a perfect suburban family with a Mother and Father, Brother and Sister. No make-shift elevators, no cut-out fried eggs or popcorn made of tissue paper – everything is provided for in neat little packages. #NationalPopcornDay. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-kbk
I read this years ago, but there a ‘sequel‘ out so I wanted to re-familiarize myself with it. So glad I did. It‘s 1680‘s Amsterdam, about a young wife learning the secrets of her new family & a mysterious miniaturist. I hope I get to learn more about the miniaturist in the sequel!
This one took me a long while to get into. I didn't find there was enough magic to be magical realism. There were some character developments that kept me going to find out what was next, and the ending chapters brought this up from a pan to a so-so.
Set in the Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago, two kids find a magic key that lets them explore the rooms. They are aimed at middle graders, but I enjoyed them. #ArtMuseumDay #NovemberNarrative @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
Wow, I loved this! It‘s not the typical ghost story or the typical living dolls story, though it has elements of both. Even though it‘s written for kids it genuinely kept me guessing. I can see this becoming a classic. #Scarathlon2022 #TeamMonsterMash @StayCurious #Spookoween2022 @TheSpineView #31by31 @Catsandbooks #PointsAThon @dieareader @GHABI4ROSES
