I've been wanting to read this for a while & was motivated to get a move on from #AudLangSpine & @julesg , & I'm so glad because it was wonderful. An academic writing an encyclopedia on faeries travels north for research and is followed by her overeager--& quite possibly magical--colleague. Emily is so delightfully stoic and socially inept, & Brambelby is her perfect foil. What a fun read! Definitely going to have to read the sequel.

@monalyisha

monalyisha I need to get to this soon, as well! Happy to see your review is enthusiastic. 🤗 2mo

I wasn't sure about this one initially. It felt like it was going to be a time travel fix-it romance. But that's exactly what the author wants you to think so she can flip your expectations. I doubt I would've read this one without your recommendation for #AudLangSpine @julesG so thank you for that! I'm looking forward to reading some more from your list

#AudLangSpine2024 @monalyisha

julesG Glad you liked it. I only read it because @Cinfhen gave it a positive review last summer. 3mo

Got my #AudLangSpine list from @monalyisha and these are the books I'm most excited to read in January-- and beyond! Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia and Starter Villain were already on my tbr but all the other titles are new to me. Can't wait to read these @julesG . I've already put most of them on hold #AudLangSpine2024

monalyisha @JulesG had such a great list! Square of Sevens looks particularly intriguing to me. Enjoy! Also...yours is the first post I've seen post-emails; always an exciting moment. 😉 4mo
julesG @monalyisha I've been holding back on a post. Was tempted to post this morning already. 4mo

A character study of a sleeping car porter named Baxter, who is gay and black. He‘s desperate to learn more about his favorite subject, dentistry, and considered lucky to hold the position he does on “the fastest train in the land” across Canada. Baxter has a rich inner life he must keep separate from his passengers who he must wait on hand and foot. A varied cast of passengers is introduced. Tensions build in this claustrophobic environment.⬇️

Chelsea.Poole #audlangspine pick from @TheKidUpstairs and I‘m so happy I finally prioritized this one. Baxter is such a singular character, I doubt I‘ll forget him. I truly loved this and now I‘ll be stalking your list every year!! 😆 I never would have picked this up on my own and that‘s why #alspine is the gift that keeps giving @monalyisha 12mo
TheKidUpstairs I'm so glad you loved it! This was my number one pick last year, I just thought it was so brilliant. I felt such tension for Baxter reading it, just urging the train to go, and nothing to go wrong for him. And the rhythm of the writing mimicking the rhythm of the train, chugging along until the train stops and it all fractures. And such a beautiful ending! It makes me giddy when someone else loves this book, too! 12mo
monalyisha Well, okay. Stacked from your review & from your ensuing discussion, @Chelsea.Poole & @TheKidUpstairs! 12mo

Chelsea.Poole @TheKidUpstairs oh yeah, all that chaos. So claustrophobic and tense. I‘ve been beholden to others in service jobs though nothing to the extent that Baxter goes (through on that train)but the part about pretending to be an automaton was oh so relatable! 12mo
Suet624 I purchased this one a few years ago and just as it comes up to the top of the pile to read a library hold comes in. Can‘t wait to read it! 11mo
Suet624 I should also add that time is wonky for me and I could have purchased it a year ago or three years ago. 😳 11mo
