My second book for #litworld2018gb The illustrations caught my eye when I saw this on Hoopla. I liked how the author paced the story withholding info to allow the reader to really appreciate the bond between grandmother and grandchild. It lightly touches on the Cambodian genocide and life before and after for the refugees in this story. A great one to introduce this material to young readers. #readtheworld, #worldliterature, #asianbooks

Is social justice poetry a thing? If not, it should be. Shraya writes really simplistic, candid poems about race, sexuality, and colonialism. I'll be devouring the rest of her work now. There's an honesty here that reminds me of Rupi Kaur, but Shraya has a different style. There's incisive commentary in here about whiteness and how POC can contribute to anti-Black racism and encourage settler oppression against Indigenous people. Highly recommend.

ReadingEnvy I really liked this .. of similar themes but different approach (if you haven't seen it yet) is 2y

This poetry collection has a new special place in my heart. Vuong writes incisively about generational trauma, cultural barriers, and sexuality. His imagery leaps off the page to describe his family's history with the Vietnam War and coming to live in the United States. He speaks about being an openly gay Asian man with candor and sensuality. I really dug his poetry style too and the way he broke up stanzas and verses. Worthy of all the praise! 🌌

BookishFeminist UGH this is supposed to be a review not a blurb. It's a solid PICK. 🤘🏼#poetry #authorsofcolor #asianbooks #queerbooks #lgbtbooks #diversebooks (edited) 2y

#BookMail from yesterday 📬🎉

I've been meaning to get my hands on this book for a while now and finally did! It's about adultery—the main character returns to his home to end his marriage every summer from the Chinese Army but can't bring himself to do it, postponing the engagement he's kept with a nurse in the city for 18 years. Sounds fascinating.

FloofyMouse It took me a while to get round to reading this one as well! I recommend Shanghai Baby 3y

Another great graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang! Creating his own origin story for the short-lived Golden Age super hero the Green Turtle, Yang crafts an adventure that is both heartwarming and humorous. The author's note and Blazing Comics #1 help the reader to better understand the history behind the character. #2017Book20 #graphicnovel #diversebooks #ownvoices #asianbooks

After the Bloom | Leslie Shimotakahara
Mehso-so

It offers very intimate and thought-provoking insight into the psyche of post-WWII internment survivors as well as the effects on their children & the raising of their children. It's intellectual & emotional. But it's dishearteningly boring & lethargic, which makes it very challenging to stay interested or connect with any of the characters. 2/5.
