monalyisha Just heard about the reports of misconduct made against Diaz. I still haven‘t read anything by him, but was planning to listen to Oscar Wao on audio. Do they impact your decision to invite him to your party? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.thecut.com/2018/05/author-junot-diaz-accused-of... (edited) 6y
Valeka I‘ve heard about the misconduct allegations and I am disappointed. My invitees are solely based on their literary influence on me as a writer and avid reader. 6y

I confess I'm not loving the way every woman is described in terms of their sex appeal (or lack thereof). Thinking I should write something similar from a female point of view. "His rear was more flabby than firm and didn't fill out the back of his jeans. Ditto for his front".

Kathrin I have the audio book on hold at the library. It has probably been a year, since I listened to the first part... I forgot all about that. Ha, still looking forward to a couple of hours of senseless entertainment! 😆 8y
Dogearedcopy To be fair, Butcher has claimed that when he wrote Storm Front, it was deliberately bad. He was trying 2 prove something to his writing teacher; and all were surprised when it took off. The writing over the series does improve; and there's equal opportunity sexism in later titles #Thomas 😄 8y

Sue @Dogearedcopy I didn't know that - that's pretty funny. 8y
marie3blue He writes girl-power awesomesauce women in his Codex Alera series. I have to admit that I didn't really think about this when reading Storm Front though. Harry seemed to like women but be very immature about them at the same time. 8y
marie3blue I have always cringed when listening to urban fantasy with my husband and the author starts talking about how hot the male lead is. Even in the Mercy Thompson series where the romance is slow burn and not in the fore, the descriptions can be a little awkward to listen to with a man present. :D 8y
BookishFeminist I love this series but I totally feel you--this is a big pet peeve of mine in detective novels generally. They are HUGE offenders of objectifying women. The plots are so great but every time Dresden meets a woman I just go 🙄🖕🏼 8y
BookishFeminist @Dogearedcopy That makes me feel a little better. It still drives me nuts though when it's done "deliberately" but the point isn't obvious. I'm glad the writing improves--I haven't gotten to some of the later titles yet! 8y
