This is whom I want my girls to emulate. Buck that system if you see something wrong, even if it is an Islamaphobic teacher who thinks he can berate you. Your mom will get expelled with you. Set in #Qatar but this sweet love story could be set anywhere.

With #Jordan (Pillars of Salt) and #Qatar (My Life in Doha) finished in November, I have now just the Philippines left to finish #ReadingAsia2021. I saved this one for December to combine my read with #FoodAndLit.

I hope to start and finish my chosen book (America is not the Heart) soon, so I can maybe make an early start with #ReadingAfrica2022!

Why I loved this teen romance even though I normally despise romance: believable characters. Zayneb takes action in the face of bullshit & injustice. Adam is quiet & considerate. Islamic faith is satisfyingly woven into the narrative in an #ownvoices way. I wept at a stranger‘s kindness, then at the description of MS symptoms, but didn‘t feel like the author toyed with my emotions. I guess “believable” is the key word here. I cared. #Canadian

I was not thrilled that my YA bookclub chose this title, since I am not a fan of romance. I‘d read Ali‘s Saints and Misfits previously and it was okay, but I have little patience these days for books that I am not passionate about. I admit I was pre-hating this book. I decided to just read enough of it to be able to join in the discussion. Then, I got sucked into the story. Wow, was I ever wrong about this book!

Hooked_on_books I love when I go into a book with a bad attitude and it changes my mind. That‘s the best! 2mo
Lindy @Hooked_on_books It doesn‘t happen often that I go in with a bad attitude, but, yes, how wonderful it is to be wrong sometimes. Our zoom discussion of this book was last night and everyone said good things about it. 👍 2mo

Everyone has a different definition of what “doing your best” means. For Mom and Dad, it means not rocking any boats.
For me it means fixing things that are wrong.

Mehso-so

The author and her Arab Muslim husband move to #Qatar. She came from the Philippines, raised Catholic, and met him in the US where they both attended med school. It is fascinating how she found her way in this conservative country, staying true to her beliefs. She even works as a cardiologist while raising 5 kids. I just wish she would be a bit more critical about what definitely is not the most correct country on earth.

An #ownvoices YA with diversity within it. This book shows the experiences of a girl born within the faith and a convert to the religion. At its heart it is still a love story so it does have a fluffy happy ever after. 😄
A general pick but I did get a bit annoyed with Zeynab's storyline. It seem overly complicated at times.
Read this for #qatar #readingasia2021

I needed something light to read and this was perfect. A teen romance that also has lots of social commentary on the mistreatment of Muslims in today's world. The characters are charming and the story moves quickly.

Librarybelle Hooray for light reads! 8mo

I read 6 books this month to give me 23 in total. This month I read books from #bangladesh, #iraq, #turkmenistan, #qatar, #lebanon and #srilanka.

I really need some of those large countries to make my map look better!

Cinfhen Looks good to me 🥰 9mo

Ugh, no, not for me! What did the author learn as a woman in #Qatar? Not a lot. Certainly not the difference between your and you‘re, or how to string a coherent sentence together without inserting numerous exclamation marks.

And she didn‘t learn how to respect other cultures either. What the heck does she mean by Ramadan being a ‘ramming‘? People ramming food into their mouths is all I could think of but... 🤷‍♀️

rockpools @squirrelbrain That‘s very generous of you, but I had an enjoyably swashbuckling time hanging out in Qatar with a bunch of pirates. I‘m going to quit while I‘m ahead on that one! 9mo
