Wish You Were Here | Jodi Picoult

Full disclosure, this is a pandemic book set in New York City, which was one of the most COVID-19-wracked cities in the USA. Jodie P did her research, as per usual. It wasn‘t your typical Jodi P book, tho, in that it‘s told from a single POV. I read it in two days. It fully immersed me. It‘s a book about finding hope in a dark time and finding yourself along the way.

Alex Fletcher is an ex-Marine and is now a pharmaceutical rep with a bit of paranoia about flu pandemics. The year is 2013, and he has a vivid memory of the Swine Flu outbreak. Alex‘s paranoia has led him to stockpile food, water, power supplies, and plenty of guns and ammo. His plan is a simple one: isolate himself and his family from everyone throughout the flu outbreak, even as the world they know crumbles around them…

I‘ve been wanting to read Louise Erdrich for a while now and I went into this blind. It took a bit to sort out who/what the story was about but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. Might be worth a reread in 10-20 years to relive 2019/2020. I currently have 2 books going with ghosts involved in the plot which is quite unusual for me 👻

Tamra I‘m ready for a reread of this one! 1w
Cortg @Tamra Go for it! It‘s def a reread-able book! 1w

I‘m so glad @merelybookish pointed me toward this book! I agree with you that it definitely has Ducks, Newburyport vibes. 🩵 I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story about marriage, life, getting older, finding meaning, and yes, Melville. With poignant pandemic moments throughout, which felt timely as I read this almost exactly four years later. A #TOB long list gem this year for sure.

Liz_M Ok, I've wanted to read this because Moby-Dick, but Duck vibes?! 😍 Now I think I need to own a copy!!! 1w
sarahbarnes @Liz_M I loved the flow of the text. I hope you like it! 1w
merelybookish I'm so glad you liked it too!! It doesn't seem like it should work, but it does! 1w

So beautiful in its seemingly simple premise: a mom telling her 3 grown daughters a story of her youth while they‘re all home at the family farm during the pandemic. I loved it so much. A bookseller put this in my hands and I‘m glad she did! 💗

CogsOfEncouragement I understand there are references to Our Town, so I‘m reading that before this one. I really enjoyed The Dutch House and look forward to more of her books. 1w
LiteraryinLawrence @CogsOfEncouragement I just borrowed Our Town from the library for that exact reason! I think reading it beforehand is smart. 1w
CogsOfEncouragement Our Town is a very quick read. Enjoy! 1w

Absolutely loved this book. Despite the fact that I have not loved some of the author's prior novels, and despite the reviews that make valid points about the simplistic tokenism of the one Black supporting character, I nevertheless read this book voraciously and was all in for the whole ride.

AmyG Same. This is my favorite of hers. 2w
LiteraryinLawrence I‘m in the middle of it now and I‘m loving the storytelling. 2w

TheBookHippie Ack this is why I haven‘t read it plus the fact that northern Michigan 😵‍💫😵‍💫is not a nice place. I keep flip flopping on to read or not to read. 1w
REPollock @TheBookHippie I listened to the audiobook which is read by Meryl Streep. I think her narration really added to the experience and I often thought that if I had been reading a printed copy I would not have enjoyed it as much. 1w
TheBookHippie @REPollock now that‘s a good plan!!! Thanks! 1w

The first sentence of the book blurb hooked me immediately: “A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store‘s most annoying customer.” But this wasn‘t at all what I expected—I‘m not sure why I thought it would be cozy and lighthearted (bookstore ghost story!). Somehow I didn‘t pick up on the setting/timing and the difficult topics that would of course entail. But my expectations aside…⬇️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …the thoughtfulness and depth here was beautiful. I appreciated the view this novel gave me into Native American culture and its intersections with movements for racial justice during pandemic-times. And yet, all of the above was almost just a backdrop to this rich, beautifully-written, character-driven narrative that not only refers to but demonstrates the power of the written word. ⬇️ (edited) 3w
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) The relationships and the complexity of personalities here will definitely stay with me. Thank you to @monalyisha for another great title from your #AuldLangSpine list! 3w
monalyisha You‘re welcome! I‘m so glad this worked for you. I read it independently but it was a selection for my library‘s book club and I know there were at least a few patrons who *hated* it. Clearly, I felt differently. I need to make it a more present goal to read more of her work. 3w
BarbaraJean @monalyisha I can definitely see how this isn't to everyone's taste (especially if they get the erroneous idea of “cozy bookstore ghost story“ as I initially did!). And I wonder if for many, it's still too close to the events of 2020. This isn't a “lovable“ book—Tookie is a complicated character and this was challenging at times. But it's so, so good. Erdrich is an amazing writer and I want to read more from her as well. 2w

It‘s 1918 and we‘re on the maternity ward of a hospital in Ireland, right in the middle of the flu epidemic. We spend three days with Nurse Julia Powell, Dr Kathleen Lynn, and Bridie, an orphan who comes to volunteer. Nurse Powell narrates a very detailed story of births and deaths, hope and despair. I love nurses as much as the next person, but I might be a little tired of them after the nurses in The Women.
