Desolation Mountain: A Novel | William Kent Krueger

This book was more interesting for character growth and a hint at a possible major change than for the plot, which involves a possible conspiracy. I enjoyed it. #audiowalk

Still enjoying this book, and it‘s interesting watching Steven‘s journey to manhood. I hate that white flower in the picture above the book cover. It‘s the only thing I can smell blooming before I see it, and it makes my eyes water and itch and my nose start running. 😣 #audiowalk

It was up in the 80s today, but it was still breezy, so I had a nice #audiowalk. Poor Steven! He‘s going through the young adult thing of wondering what kind of man he is, comparing himself to Cork and to his brother-in-law, Daniel. He‘s finding himself wanting; I‘m sure he‘ll eventually realize he‘s not wanting — he‘s just a different kind of man from them.

This Cork O‘Connor mystery revolves around a vision Steven has. Steven is 20 and in college; he was 5 or 6 when we first met him! Bo Thorsen, from The Devil‘s Bed, also shows up. It was extremely windy outside today. That tree in the bay was not there the day before yesterday; I guess yesterday‘s storm was strong enough to bring it there. #audiowalk

The Porcupine Year | Louise Erdrich

I didn‘t like this one as much as the first two, though that little porcupine was cute! I‘m not sure why this one didn‘t hold my interest as well as the first two in the series, but I did lose focus a few times. (Note: I was not listening to an audio, so can‘t blame it on that.) I will continue the series, however

Loved this book. One for lovers of books about travel, nature and books. And the illustrations, especially of her baby daughter, are so sweet.

I am haunted by a book that I found the first time I visited Ober's island...
a little pamphlet-sized inconsequential-looking book covered with a black paper that looked like oilcloth. I slipped it from the shelf and opened it. Tristram Shandy. The first novel in the English language.... Laurence Sterne had signed the title page. I had a strange, covetous, Golum-like feeling as I held the book, my precious.

The Falcon | John Tanner
Bailedbailed

I got halfway through but then gave up as it was just too repetitive with variations on I went hunting and killed this many animals. Not an auspicious start to my reading year.

This is a hard book to read. Tragedy and darkness follow Saul Indian Horse, but he finds hockey and for a while it is the light he needs and he throws himself into the game. The book is heavy and mirrors Sauls life, there is a lightness to the hockey chapters that were needed. The light doesn't last. The book is well balanced and an essential slice of life of Canadian people and history.
