Out of the Dust | Karen Hesse

Reading this all-the-feels story of a young girl growing up on a #farm during the 1930s dust bowl years in the US, beautifully written in free-verse. Thank you @Talewaggingreads . You told me I would enjoy it. You know me. Pic of today's walk beside the sand dunes at the wildlife refuge. #Newberry #Scholastic #SavvySettings @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Eggs

mandarchy This is such a good book. I read it several years ago and it has never left me. Now you need to read Aleutian Sparrow. 2y

⭐⭐⭐
I liked the history, and journal entry writing style. It's an entertaining story, but Catherine constantly taking the Lord's name in vain, ruined it for me.

megnews I like journal entry style writing too but that would‘ve ruined it for me as well. 5y

Pickpick

“It has been awful, but I hadn‘t quit. I had persisted. In battle I had won.”

What a beautiful historical novel about a young girl who stops allowing her disability to define her. We can‘t choose our family, but that doesn‘t mean we can‘t have a family of our own making. Read this basically in a day. Could not put it down! And now to dive into the sequel! 🐴 🐴🐴🐴🐴

Bookwormjillk I loved this one too. Can't wait for the sequel. 6y
saresmoore My daughter adores this book. 6y
EvieBee @Bookwormjillk I was just so surprised! So well written. 6y

EvieBee @saresmoore She has great taste! I love how the author doesn‘t talk down to us but involves the reader in the story. So good! 6y
Aseleener I'm reading this with my daughter as it's one of her Battle of the Books books. We just started but are enjoying it so far. 6y
EvieBee @Aseleener Isn‘t it awesome? It‘s hard not to read in one sitting, which I actually did! Trying to pace myself with the sequel. 6y

There are some crazy great deals on Kindle books today! https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?rh=n:6165851011&ie=UTF8&qid=1501064819&... All books/authors are award winners or finalists-everything from the #Pulitzer to the #Newberry. Maybe in honor of today's #Manbooker announcement? 🤔

Pickpick

This year's #Newberry winner did not disappoint. The story is told from several different view points, but it ties together in the end. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

AliBG I've been nervous to read this--There's so much PRESSURE to like a medalist, And I often don't, so then I feel like a failure...and... anyhow, I am glad to hear you enjoyed it. Maybe I'll risk it! (edited) 7y
Lmstraubie @AliBG I know what you mean!! I felt that way with Pride & Prejudice. I really wanted to like it and felt like there was something wrong with me because I didn't. 😣 7y
