I‘ve never been a huge fan of Melville‘s work BUT I‘ve never read any of his short stories which are supposed to be excellent. So, here goes. Let‘s see if these change my opinion…

Third in the Aubrey-Maturin series - I loved it. Jack finally gets a command and is commissioned to sail to the Malay Peninsula, first stopping in India. There‘s espionage, romance, bromance, a naval battle, a duel at dawn, tragic death, sudden squalls, the literal doldrums…just fantastic.

I‘m bailing. Hate to do it, but since looking at the excellent books I read in January I don‘t want to lose that streak of excellence just starting off in February. This book is dry as dirt. There‘s a shipwreck but it‘s not as dire as it makes out. They‘re on an island with a constant food source (sea lions) and ability to build shelter. If it weren‘t cast as so life-threatening then maybe it‘d be ok. But the attempt at drama is poor. ⬇️

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

I really liked the first part where we were following the story in real time. I lost some interest in the descriptions of what other people thought happened in the following 50 years.
Already reading for Riverbend Books standing orders. This one is a #marchrso2024. #currentlyreading #fantasy #sirens #romance #quests #nautical Have managed to avoid many of the siren books, but I suspect this one is similar. Plus a #treefern #summerholidays #readingandreviewing #noschool
Sorry this is a little bit late.
Here are my plans:
📚finish Half-Blood Prince & Last Mission to Tokyo
📚read The Bookbinder & Bloodletting and miraculous cures

Jack Aubrey invites Stephen Maturin to become his ship's doctor/surgeon in 1800.
It is certainly a steep learning curve as the author makes no concessions to readers' ignorance of naval terminology and practice of the period. There were definitely times when I had no idea what was going on. it certainly throws into relief how much other authors play down the strangeness of the past.

"The music-room in the Governor‘s House at Port Mahon, a tall, handsome, pillared octagon, was filled with the triumphant first movement of Locatelli‘s C major quartet."
