I‘ve never been a huge fan of Melville‘s work BUT I‘ve never read any of his short stories which are supposed to be excellent. So, here goes. Let‘s see if these change my opinion…

charl08 Gorgeous edition! 4w
KCofKaysville @TracyReadsBooks My youngest sister hated Billy Budd which she had to read in HS. I really liked Bartleby and saw a short movie of it. Only made it half thru Moby Dick as a teen. Will try again! 4w
TracyReadsBooks @KCofKaysville I really liked Bartleby a lot. Haven‘t gotten to Billy Budd yet. I‘m finding the stories surprisingly readable. Enjoying them perhaps even more than I expected! 3w

Third in the Aubrey-Maturin series - I loved it. Jack finally gets a command and is commissioned to sail to the Malay Peninsula, first stopping in India. There‘s espionage, romance, bromance, a naval battle, a duel at dawn, tragic death, sudden squalls, the literal doldrums…just fantastic.

#pop24 - published under a pen name
#The52BookClub24 - features the ocean

BookDadGirlDad Loved this entire series!!! 2mo

I‘m bailing. Hate to do it, but since looking at the excellent books I read in January I don‘t want to lose that streak of excellence just starting off in February. This book is dry as dirt. There‘s a shipwreck but it‘s not as dire as it makes out. They‘re on an island with a constant food source (sea lions) and ability to build shelter. If it weren‘t cast as so life-threatening then maybe it‘d be ok. But the attempt at drama is poor. ⬇️

Texreader So I do not recommend it for #foodandlit or #readingoceania #NewZealand 2mo
Texreader @Librarybelle 😂😂😂 I‘m going to have to remember that tag!! 2mo
Librarybelle I‘ve seen others on Litsy use it…it‘s a good one! 😂 2mo

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

I really liked the first part where we were following the story in real time. I lost some interest in the descriptions of what other people thought happened in the following 50 years.

Already reading for Riverbend Books standing orders. This one is a #marchrso2024. #currentlyreading #fantasy #sirens #romance #quests #nautical Have managed to avoid many of the siren books, but I suspect this one is similar. Plus a #treefern #summerholidays #readingandreviewing #noschool

Jack Aubrey invites Stephen Maturin to become his ship's doctor/surgeon in 1800.

It is certainly a steep learning curve as the author makes no concessions to readers' ignorance of naval terminology and practice of the period. There were definitely times when I had no idea what was going on. it certainly throws into relief how much other authors play down the strangeness of the past.

Cuilin My dad is a huge fan of these and as a shanty man he‘s done his research. He loves the detail but you‘re correct the arcane descriptions make it a challenging read. France/Napoleonic Era ✅🎉 4mo
Ruthiella I agree, there‘s a lot of terminology that went right over my head. But still, I really enjoyed it and while I didn‘t understand every detail, the battle scenes were taut and thrilling. 4mo
dabbe On the spreadsheet! 🤩 4mo
Deblovestoread I am struggling with this one a bit. Think I will switch from audio to print and see if that helps. 4mo
rwmg @Deblovestoread I cannot imagine reading this as an audiobook 4mo

"The music-room in the Governor‘s House at Port Mahon, a tall, handsome, pillared octagon, was filled with the triumphant first movement of Locatelli‘s C major quartet."
