Pickpick

While the subject was to be the relationship between Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, this book encompassed the trials and triumphs of many Black musicians, celebrities, and athletes. It isn‘t hard to determine the Author‘s blind spots but he encouraged the charisma of Muhammad Ali to shine through his prose. A much more complex look at the sixties than I had expected. #Nonfictionovember

This is an interesting look at how these 2 historical people's paths crossed. I do think it could have been a long form article. There were entire chapters dedicated to blow by blow fights Ali had which felt like filler. I did find the general history of boxing that was included interesting. My boyfriend and I are reading about Malcolm X this year and this was a fresh and new look at the end of his life and the struggle for power in the NOI.

The Fight | Norman Mailer
post image
Mehso-so

No, not the story of Mailer‘s fight with Rip Torn (It‘s on YouTube-and it‘s the most bizarre thing you‘ll ever see), but Norman‘s inside report from the boxers‘ camp in Zaire during the Foreman/Ali fight. There‘s no ambiguity here: Mailer‘s ego is much bigger than Ali‘s- how dare this pugilist get as much money for fighting as I get for writing intellectual masterpieces? Tropes, stereotypes, casual and explicit racism abound from pompous Mailer.

For Beautiful Black Boys Who Believe in a Better World | Michael W. Walters, Keisha Morris

Pickpick

This lovely #picturebook written by #MichaelWWaters and illustrated by #KeishaMorris would make a thoughtful, age-appropriate introduction to talking with children about the killing of unarmed Black people in the United States. The book even has a useful conversation guide by the #MuhammadAli Center. A necessary read about an important issue.

Pickpick

Tales of Famous Heroes is a (B) by Peter and Connie Roop and Illustrated by Rebecca Zomchek. The Tales of Famous is about the biography of 25 heroes and their achievements. The biography is from the heroes of today and history. This book is terrific for independent reading (IR) because it allows the students to explore heroes they might know about and learn about heroes from our history. #UCFLAE3414SP21

StephanyNunez The UDL principle for the biography and source is 7.1 (Optimize individual choice and autonomy). The source beneath will provide teachers with strategies to support students' independent reading. http://www.readwritethink.org/professional-development/strategy-guidessupporting... Adodd1 Using these books for an IR would be great, especially if they may use this book for resources for research! The link you provided showing the different strategies to support students is very helpful as well! 3y
DrSpalding This is a picture book biography, anthology. You can dip in and dip out of this book to read about significant men and women during social studies instruction. The English learner strategy is actually 28 rather than eight. 3y
