In 1978, LA cop Bryan Vila went to #Micronesia as it was transitioning to independence to train the local police forces. This could have been a testosterone-fueled meathead of a book, but Vila clearly approached each of the 12 cultures with respect. There are also some quite funny moments. Highly recommend. Also works for #Palau and #MarshallIslands

Librarybelle Love the quote! 2mo
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle Me too! And it really exemplifies the book and his attitudes. He was such a good choice for this role, to get the policing of these new countries off on the right foot. Really respectful guy. 2mo

This is an absolutely bonkers book and I liked it! Truly bonkers. A cannibal, a ghostly messiah, a talking fruitbat, a lovable transvestite, a reporter with flying pig underwear, supervillains, R-rated sex, ninjas (sort of), a knockoff but still pink Mary Kay with a thick Texas accent, etc etc. The hapless hero turned out to be a hero and the book came to a very satisfying end. Narrator second to none.

Librarybelle That sounds hilarious! 3mo
Texreader @Librarybelle I don‘t think I would have stuck with it but for needing #Micronesia, because it takes awhile for the best humor to show up. It just feels annoying. Then, boom, you start caring about the island people and what the supervillains are doing, and you hope the ghostly messiah doesn‘t lead the islanders astray. (edited) 3mo

TheBookgeekFrau If this was your first Christopher Moore don't give up! It's not his best. My favorite is 3mo
KathyWheeler I need to find my copy and actually read it. My favorites of his are: Lamb, Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck, and Bite Me. The last three are vampire love stories. 3mo
BarbaraBB That really sounds completely bonkers! 3mo

BarbaraBB Great! I am going to read this one for Micronesia: 3mo
squirrelbrain I thought about choosing this book for #micronesia so I‘d be interested to hear your thoughts. @BarbaraBB - that one is a tough read, but it‘s really good. 3mo
Librarybelle I‘ve not read anything by Moore. Will be interested to see your thoughts! 3mo

This is not a fun book like all of the author‘s books from Oceania—you will learn he‘s sadly and desperately recovering from alcoholism, which isn‘t much of a surprise if you read his prior books. So trigger warning. He takes a solo trip to follow Robert Louis Stevenson‘s travels to his final resting place in #Samoa, with stops in #Kiribati and islands in #Micronesia. Having listened to his other books, this is a sharp departure from his ⬇️

Texreader fun-loving days in Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Fiji. But it‘s still him doing half-witted things like a very short swim with sharks. His candor and insight are appreciated. It‘s a well-written book. By the way, if you haven‘t guessed by now, the titles of his books are only very remotely related to the substance of his books, here even less so. I hope his recovery continues. #readingOceania @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB (edited) 3mo
Librarybelle Good to know about this one! 3mo
5feet.of.fury I always loved the 1st chapter, “Good luck seeks no antecedent, but bad luck demands an inquest.” “Bad things happen to me on large land masses” I agree with you on the tone, it‘s 1 I‘ve hardly revisited because of the intensity of the self reflection vs the wild adventure of the 1st 2. 3mo
