An LA cop accepts the position of chief of police over all the Micronesian islands in the late 1970s to 1980s, and dang was it ever an adventurous true story. Sometimes it was downright scary and at least twice it was hysterically funny thanks to very real cultural differences from island to island. I don‘t think any book could better describe the islands‘ cultures, and adapting to them than this book. Very readable nonfiction. The author is ⬇️

In 1978, LA cop Bryan Vila went to #Micronesia as it was transitioning to independence to train the local police forces. This could have been a testosterone-fueled meathead of a book, but Vila clearly approached each of the 12 cultures with respect. There are also some quite funny moments. Highly recommend. Also works for #Palau and #MarshallIslands

An interesting account of the impact of the US nuclear tests on the people of the #marshallislands.

In 1954 the US detonated a bomb that was a thousand times more powerful than Hiroshima- and the resulting fall-out decimated the islands and the lives of the inhabitants.

The audio narrator was a little bit robotic (maybe due to me listening at 1.8x) so I switched to digital print for the final 20% - much better.

So this collection of poems represents the Marshall Islands. So beautifully written and she really touched my heart with her words describing her life as a Marshallese daughter. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Linguistic anthropologist Berman explores the culture of a village on a small #MarshallIslands atoll, revealing the socialization of adults and children based on behavior and language. I was worried this would be dry, but it‘s completely fascinating. She uses a simple story of an interaction between multiple people to illustrate each of her points and is deeply respectful of the people and their culture.

This book is from the “Country Jumper” series and is chock full of interesting facts. It‘s written for kids, but not too elementary. I think it‘s probably best used as an introduction to junior high level and older students and older folks like me who want to know about a country because the author does not stupid down anything, which I wholeheartedly appreciate. I‘m ready to jump to other countries! Highly recommended for a short read for ⬇️
