Given my latest read, when I saw this in the rundown, usually filled with terrible books “little free library” near my work, I immediately picked it up.

Opened it up and ooooffff… the brutality! Poor Sophie! It was so heartfelt!

Maybe I‘m just too sentimental?

LeeRHarry Nope you‘re not - brutal! 1y
Ruthiella What if Isobel loved is SO MUCH that Sophie later bought her a beautiful hardbound set of the trilogy for graduation and then encouraged Sophie to set the paperback free ? 1y
MissLucyIrene @Ruthiella This is what I am going to choose to believe 1y

The Handmaid's Tale | Margaret Atwood

Pickpick

If you haven't read this: Read. It.

Dystopian novels are proliferating the market, but they're also outrageously relevant. While some are better than others, many are compared to Atwood. She just... got it.

Her writing is superb, specific, eerie. She so adeptly places the reader right alongside "Offred" as she remembers the time before and considers how she might change her present.

A great reread for my #FeministClassic pick for #Booked2018

JSW Atwood is a genius. The end. 6y
Melissa_J I read this one back in high school (which was a looong time ago 😬) and loved it. I often think I should give it a re-read. 6y

mrozzz @JSW I‘ve gotta try her other novels ASAP 6y
mrozzz @Melissa_J same! I was dying for a reread. Such good timing to pick it up again.... 6y
mrozzz @ReadOrDieRachel 😄🙌🏻 6y
UrsulaMonarch Great idea for the feminist classic prompt! I think I'll do it too - never a bad time to reread it... and now is sadly a particularly good time. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mrozzz @Melissa_J I read this when it first came out and just didn‘t get it. But I was a very young 20-something and hadn‘t lived much. Now, a few decades later, it is one of my all-time favorites. I also NEED to make time for some more Atwood. 6y
Cinfhen How do you like this in comparison to 6y
Cinfhen I used Handmaid's Tale for #femClassic too ~ such a good read 6y
Reggie I like that Atwood made the main character a “The other woman” in the before and after. Like no matter what, she was still team woman and deserving of all her rights. 6y
mrozzz @UrsulaMonarch I know... 😔 But it‘s amazing. It‘ll get you riled up. 6y
mrozzz @Cinfhen I think the Power wouldn‘t have been written without books like Handmaid‘s Tale. Power feels like next generation, which is amazing, I hope these books never stop. PS Atwood is probably a better scenic/visual writer. 6y
mrozzz @Reggie I didn‘t even realize that! Huh. But you‘re right of course! 6y
mrozzz @BarbaraTheBibliophage Wow! Well I‘m sure many would be interested if you want to host a buddy read when you‘re ready! I have no idea where I‘d start in her backlist. 6y
Cinfhen So interesting @Reggie I never thought about that either and I agree, it's clear NA used the Atwood for inspiration and she does acknowledge Atwood in her preface @mrozzz (edited) 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mrozzz @Cinfhen I really must read The Power this month. I‘ve been anxious to do so since the ARC reviews started. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mrozzz Since there already was a buddy read for Alias Grace, then I‘d go with the #MaddAddam trilogy. It starts with 6y
Cinfhen I‘d totally join that #BuddyRead, Barbara ❣️❣️ 6y
mrozzz @BarbaraTheBibliophage oh COOL. Let me know if you want to make that happen! @Cinfhen is already showing interest too ☺️ 6y
mrozzz @BarbaraTheBibliophage PS can‘t wait to see your thoughts on 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mrozzz @Cinfhen Let me figure out my other buddy reads and see where this fits. It would be fun to do together! 6y
mrozzz Yes it would be! Just give me plenty of heads up when you‘re ready.. I‘ll have to figure out where I should get my copies from @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen 😃 6y
JSW @mrozzz I thought The Blind Assassain was stunningly good. And I thought the Penelopiad was clever. And I loved Hagseed. 6y
mrozzz @JSW NOTED 🙏🏻 (edited) 6y
Cinfhen Keep me in the loop ladies @BarbaraTheBibliophage @mrozzz I think @JenP mentioned she would be willing to lead another group read...she did an AWESOME job for 6y
JenP @Cinfhen I‘m actually planning an Atwood-a-thon maybe to start in March if I can get my act together but the trilogy wasn‘t going to be part of that (bc I read it recently). 6y
Cinfhen I‘m a fan of Atwood and you @JenP and of course @BarbaraTheBibliophage @mrozzz too so I‘ll basically join anything you ladies lead😘😘😘 6y
JenP @Cinfhen actually, if you wanted to fold in the trilogy, then we could alternate hosts and @BarbaraTheBibliophage and @mrozzz could be in charge of those ones. I was planning on doing a different book each month. Let me know what you think. (edited) 6y
JenP @Cinfhen you are too kind! And the feeling is mutual 🤗 6y
mrozzz @JenP Definitely let us know when you‘re arranging the readathon, could be fun!! We‘ll have to pow-wow @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen 😃 6y
