Scarlet | Marissa Meyer

Mehso-so

To rescue her grandmother, Scarlet teams up with a street fighter named Wolf. While Cinder continues her escape from Queen Levana.

This was breakneck! No time to breathe, because everything is happening all at once. Politics, romance, betrayal, secrets, & no happy endings yet. Very clearly a middle story, so nothing really gets resolved. & a bit of instalove, which I‘m not a fan of. But a fun retelling with interesting new characters! 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

This conclusion to the Lunar Chronicles is the most epic installment of the series, the most adventure-packed…and also my least favorite. I enjoyed Winter the character more than Winter the book! I just got lost in all the political machinations—even though I appreciate how much work Marissa Meyer put into staging a realistic uprising— I just really felt how long this one is. I really enjoyed the ending however!

The screw through Cinder‘s ankle had rusted, the engraved cross marks worn to a mangled circle. Her knuckles ached from forcing the screwdriver into the joint as she struggled to loosen the screw one gritting twist after another.

Rapunzel is a hacker and her tower prison is a satellite out in space in this incredibly clever, fun, sharp, and exciting third installment of the Lunar Chronicles. This was my favorite yet—because of the character of Cress herself. Her sensitivity and wonder provide such a foil for Meyer‘s streetwise Cinder and Scarlet. They‘re all lovable though! I love how Meyer plays with the key elements of the original fairy tales in her sci-fi setting.

Vanity is a factor, but it is more a question of control. It is easier to trick others into perceiving you as beautiful if you can convince yourself you are beautiful. But mirrors have an uncanny way of telling the truth.

Little Red Riding Hood flies a mean spaceship, and she‘s on the tail of her missing grandmother with the help of a mysterious street fighter named Wolf in this series of sci-fi fairy tale retellings that continues the story started (once upon a time) in Cinder. These books are so fun, action-packed, and clever.

Cinderella is a cyborg, the prince and his palace are in New Beijing, the wicked stepmother is outdone by a vicious queen from outer space, and a plague adds to all the peril, but the adventure, romance, and heroism are as epic and enchanting as ever in this sci-fi young adult retelling of the classic fairy tale. I look forward to continuing the series, meeting more fairy tale heroines in new forms, and exploring more of Cinder‘s universe!
