Called a "political travelogue" and "literary criticism with solid field reporting," this is the story of the year Emma Larkin spent in Burma, following in the footsteps of George Orwell. (He lived and worked there for 5 years in the 1920s, as an Imperial Policeman.) It seems the author might have said on her travels: see #howfarillgo and #dontstopmenow

RaimeyGallant I just finally (now that I'm on the web version) read the quote in your profile, lol. 5mo

Running in the Family | Michael Ondaatje

#twopromptsatonce 😂
“Don‘t stop me now I don‘t know how far I‘ll go” is the kind of thing Michael Ondaatje‘s father might have said when a croquet game went wrong and he started brandishing a gun. This memoir of Michael‘s childhood is full of anecdotes and tall tales - which he admits might have grown taller with telling over the years.

Centique @Cinfhen btw it‘s not my good memory with these backlisters- it‘s cos I went through my old shelves and library records a while ago and made a list 😋 5mo
Cinfhen Hahaha!!! Thanks for setting the record straight 😘😘😘 5mo
batsy Oh, good pick! I enjoyed this one a lot ❤️ 5mo

erzascarletbookgasm Great quote! 5mo
LiterRohde @Cinfhen @Megabooks @rohit-sawant I don‘t think my name and affirmation have ever been used in the same sentence. I‘m usually the resident pessimist in the room. Too funny. 5mo
Megabooks @LiterRohde I have a friend who calls herself a “hopeful cynic”. Perhaps?? 5mo
LiterRohde @Megabooks Mayhaps. I long for the beauty of fireworks even though I know in the end they will blow up in my face. 🧨🤣🧨 5mo
Megabooks @LiterRohde See, you‘re eloquent even when you aren‘t quoting someone else. My eloquence left the building when all the veterinarian stuff went it. It was, “Hey Meg, Do you want to know how to pronounce generic drugs, use a dental drill properly, and castrate multiple species? Well, BTW, you won‘t be able to write beautifully ever again.” 😂😂😢 5mo

Daisy is only in her 20s, but she has learned that her 2nd bout of cancer is terminal. She takes it upon herself to find a new wife for her husband before she dies.

This has been compared to PS I Love You, which is why I read it. I gave this one five stars, which speaks for itself.

Cinfhen It sounds REALLY sad. 2/4 sister in laws are breast cancer survivors, I don‘t think I could read this book. A bit too close to home 😔 5mo
rohit-sawant This sounds heartbreaking. Loved PS I Love You so stacking this. 5mo

The Sea, The Sea | Iris Murdoch

#HowFarIllGo #MayMovieMadness
When the weekend ends, sometimes I have the odd fantasy of wanting to escape to some vague, lonely city by the sea, and just read for several days without interruption. I might be able to make some progress on my TBR then 🤔
Just placed a hold on the Olivia Laing, which sounds like an interesting reflection on her move to NYC and the loneliness she experienced there, along with an analysis of the same feelings in art.

readordierachel That sounds pretty perfect actually. Curious about the book! I'm reading Crudo right now and really enjoying it. 5mo
rohit-sawant Ha, sign me up for reading by vague, lonely city! 5mo
Billypar @readordierachel Good to know about Crudo- Laing wasn't on my radar before, but I'm always happy to discover new authors. 5mo

Harold Fry was certainly prepared to walk a long way to try and see Miss Queenie Hennessy before she died.
A wonderful book!

#ThrowbackSaturday #HowFarIllGo #botmchallenge #MayMovieMagic

Oh, Emily, Steph, and Lauren, look what I checked out!! This one of my favorite nonfictions from 2017!

The prompt works because of how far we went reading all 60 #botm back then. It was fun. 😁👍🏻😁 Also, how far will these arsonists go! Six fires in one night with only volunteer fire departments. Just the whole story is crazy!

Reviewsbylola Tonya is one crazy bitch! 5mo
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola if I could put a truth sticker here, I would! 5mo
Cinfhen Was this one of your firsts?!?!!?? Such a crazy story 5mo
See All 11 Comments
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was one of my first true crime books! 5mo
emilyhaldi I still can‘t believe we were crazy enough to do that challenge 😜 5mo
Megabooks @emilyhaldi Lol! I don‘t think I‘d do it again, but I‘m glad I did it once. Kinda like reaching the summit of Everest. 😂😂 5mo
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I had totally forgotten about the “club clothes” store she ran out Charlie‘s shop and that all she wore was panties and a bra to the bar one night!! 😳😳😳 5mo
L_auren @emilyhaldi @Megabooks @reviewsbylola I think that was the best year of books of BOTM thankfully!!! But never again! 5mo
emilyhaldi So true!!! @L_auren this year or last, I probably would have had to quit the challenge based on the BOTM choices 😜 5mo
Megabooks @L_auren @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola 16-17 were definitely the best years. I stopped last year because a) the books sucked, and b) the bindings were super cheap! I‘m back to reading more ebooks now, so I don‘t think it‘s worth the expense, even though I like getting packages! 😉 5mo

(Day 5 - #HowFarIllGo)

*Sabine will go a long way to finally meet her Griffin, perhaps as far as “the line where the sky meets the sea.”

marleed Oh my gosh, I‘m so obsessed with those books. I‘m missing the Alexandria one but I have all the others! 5mo
gradcat @marleed They‘re very beautiful, aren‘t they? 🥰 5mo
marleed It‘s such an intriguing way to read a series. Taking the letters out of the envelopes forces you to just sit and enjoy the process. 5mo
gradcat I think you could read one in an hour...but the reread & review value is high! @marleed (edited) 5mo
