Pickpick

This was a low pick. I was a bit confused on some things through this whole book. I picked this up for a hope punk novel for #booked2022

Kenna is super poor and starving. He stumbles upon an advertisement to eat at a super exclusive restaurant. He‘s never tasted good that wasn‘t processed. He finds a whole world where he finally fits in. His journey is very long but also only the course of a month.

Cinfhen Sounds interesting 🤨 #HopePunk was definitely the hardest prompt!!!! 1w
BarbaraTheBibliophage I still haven't read my #HopePunk choice but it's Octavia Butler so I'm definitely looking forward to it. Good for you for the stretch with this one! 1w

It‘s a good old fashioned dystopian novel- by that I mean that‘s it‘s not post pandemic but post nuclear war (we think- it‘s not actually fully detailed).
There‘s are a few plot holes, but overall entertaining enough.
I think this may be classed as a #hopepunknovel #booked2022

Cinfhen Hahaha!!! I love your distinction 😆hooray for good ole fashioned dystopian #HopePunk 2mo

I enjoyed this novel in short stories about a plague that ravages the earth‘s population, an earth already like our own, beginning to show the consequences of environmental abuse caused by humans. It‘s not a cheerful book by any means, but it‘s also not completely devoid of hope. Some chapters were stronger than others, but on the whole, this is a solid pick. 👍

sarahbarnes Great review. I agree. I thought the beginning and ending were the best parts. 2mo
Ruthiella @sarahbarnes Yes, he does manage to bring it full circle! I think Pig Son and City of Laughter are the chapters that will stay with me most. 2mo
sarahbarnes Those parts broke my heart for sure! 💔 2mo

Loved it! After Hope‘s younger sister Charity outs their older sister Faith, their ultra-conservative Christian parents plan to send Faith to a conversion camp to “fix” her. Instead, Faith runs away. Nearly a year later, when a fellow classmate, Danny, is kicked out of his home and ostracized by his friends for coming out, Hope gives him a place to stay. Their friendship deepens and they form a punk band to counter all the hate in their community.

OriginalCyn620 @TheAromaofBooks #bookspinbingo No bingo this month but got close to a couple! 2mo

This was a really impressive debut and one that will linger for a long time. A pandemic novel that reads as wholly possible now that we‘ve all experienced living through a pandemic. I loved the concept - interconnected stories focusing in different decades yet the threads of the past are still visible. Some stories were exceptional although I did fast forward/skim through one or two stories in the second half. Great choice for #CampLitsy

Megabooks So glad you loved it too! Looking forward to having you at the discussion! 👍🏻😁🏕 2mo
BarbaraBB You ended up loving it. So glad! It was a so-so for me but I can‘t remember much. I really should reread it. 2mo
Cinfhen Initially I bailed @BarbaraBB but I really enjoyed what the author did - it was super imaginative @Megabooks I‘m trying to decide if it would work for #HopePunk??!! Thoughts 💭 2mo

I loved this book, which is more extremely interconnected short stories than novel. The ending was superb as well!

In the near future, climate change has released a deadly plague from the melted Siberian tundra. The initial story is about the family that discovered it. Then there are stories about waves of infection and then how humanity is left changed afterwards. It is dark stuff. The one about a euthanasia amusement park was a favorite.

Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘ve got to disagree with you. Loved this one! And yes, I managed to find hope. 💜 3mo
Megabooks @vivastory this may be too dark for some times, but I think you‘d like it. 3mo
vivastory Thanks for the tag, Meg! This one is on my TBR & can I say the cover is 👏 👏 3mo

Cinfhen Ohhhh, definitely gonna have a listen this month!!! Would it work for #HopePunk ??? 3mo
BarbaraBB I am happy you loved it! Most people did, I think. And I love your edition! 3mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m such a hopeful person that I always find hope, but I‘m not sure other people would. It was pretty dark, so I don‘t know if you‘d feel hope reading it. It‘s a great book though! 3mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thanks! It‘s a great cover. 3mo
