@TheKidUpstairs this is my 3rd Wait and it might be my favorite - which is saying a lot because all of her books are incredible. I loved the back and forth from past to present; loved the multiple POV style, and especially loved the impending sense of tragedy (strange, I know). You know something horrific is coming but her writing is so excellent that you aren‘t racing to the finish to find out. So, so good. #ALSpine @monalyisha

CBee @CSeydel I started 2026 #ALSpine with another Wait book, fancy that! 😁 1d
CSeydel Nice! 1d

CSeydel Oh and funnily enough I finally got ahold of The Elements by John Boyle, which you had on your list last year! Started it last night! 1d
CBee @BarbaraBB I haven‘t read A View On the Way Down, so I need to grab that one! But a new one? I had no idea and am stacking it right away! 22h
CBee @CSeydel oh! Please tag me in your review - I‘d love to hear what you think! 22h
TheKidUpstairs I'm so glad you loved it! I bought it immediately after reading Our Fathers because I loved that one so much I just wanted more. She's just so good. 22h
CBee @TheKidUpstairs about the same for me! I‘ve also read this one which was from #ALSpine2025 (see comments above) and it‘s also great: 22h
CSeydel I did not realize the subject matter of The Elements was so grim when I started or I might not have dived in so impulsively 😬 But his writing is so good, it‘s incredible how you really feel like you‘re there in the scene. 7h

I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook while hand-quilting. The narrator was amazing. Nothing surprised me, but I enjoy hearing about the moments that build that cause people in cults to question everything.

This book answered lingering questions from Carolyn‘s first book, Escape. Notably, she addresses her relationship with her daughter that chose to return to the FLDS upon turning 18. The middle of the book was a bit of self-help that made the listen go slowly but she returns to her story after it so it‘s worth it to finish the book.

TW: SA. This rating is hard because Rachel Jeffs went through actual hell as Warren Jeffs daughter. But, at moments I was disappointed in her word choice. For example, she mentions “underage sex” a few times, but that makes me think of two minors having consensual sex. The word she should use is rape, and I think she only uses it once when reading charges brought against her father. I also found her voice difficult to listen to so I sped it up.

A good story about the five children who survived a cult, four of whom have spent 15 years trying to make sense of it. Chapters from the past and chapters from the present culminate in the discovery of what really happened all those years ago. I had to suspend my sense of disbelief to get to the end of this one. A soft pick as the characters didn‘t really resonate with me, yet the mystery kept my attention.

Reggie I‘m glad you made it through. I‘m always intrigued when people move to a commune and it always starts off perfect and idyllic and then it turns. I felt bad for those survivors because they felt left behind and lost. Glad you gave it a try. 1mo

4.1⭐️ and to complete out my October reads, I am with this creepy little short story. I have read Joe Hill before and I didn‘t get the creep vibes from his full length features as I did from this 54 page book. I am still shaking off the heebie-jeebies. Was I terrified… No. Did it make me question sounds… 100%! Fun way to end the month!

Bailing too soon to make a "formal" review. I only got about 40 pages in. The language of olden times feels incredibly forced And the dark cult like vibes with abused children just isn't something I can stomach at this time. I cannot remember why I bought this but I am clearing it from my shelf.
