Day 8 of #37by37

Yay I made it! ⏱️ Toward the end I started bouncing around between a couple titles but I should finish these before the month is out. 🧁

Thanks to everyone who played along. I had a truly great birthday and today I‘m attending a silent book club at a new bookstore here in town. Happy Sunday!

Happy Birthday @MatchlessMarie! I'll probably read more today but am unlikely to finish anything else. Thanksgiving madness is here!

My #37By37 goal was four books, which I met, as well as a short story and two graphic novels. And am several stories into Table for Two, one of my #10BeforeTheEnd books.

MatchlessMarie Thank you! That‘s great. I have been able to cross off 3 off my #10BeforeTheEnd list so far. 🧁 2h

Peter Carey is never going to be a favorite, but I do admire him even if I don‘t love him. This started off well but became baggy in the middle. A French aristocrat travels to antebellum America to ostensibly writes treatise on American prisons but really to escape political threats. He‘s accompanied by Englishman Parrot, a nominal servant but very much his own man and with a tragic past.

BarbaraBB I didn‘t like this one much while I loved 14h
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB This is the third book of his I‘ve read. Oscar and Lucinda was the first and I still have THREE other books of his on my physical shelves. 😅 13h

BarbaraBB Why?! I won‘t read any more by him. I didn‘t like the book you read and neither did I like 9h
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB I collected them all before I‘d ever read him because I have a good friend who really likes his work. They‘re all beautiful first editions that I thrifted so I will need to find them good homes. 8h

Trick Mirror | Jia Tolentino

Pickpick

A soft pick. I picked this up because the essay about Tolentino‘s reality TV stint was referenced in “You Wanna Be on Top?” by Sara Hartshorne. Generally I found the collection to be interesting and smart, but maybe it‘s my attention span, the essays were all too long for me - about 30 pages each. I thought a lot about what I‘d have asked her to cut were I her editor. That said, essays aren‘t my usual fare.

#37by37 (only two more books to go!).

Billypar I felt the same. There weren't any essays that I disliked, and all had interesting moments, but I didn't fall in love with any either. I still need to post a review of the tagged essay collection, my favorite in some time. A few are pretty long, but all well worth it. 1d
Ruthiella @Billypar Glad I‘m not alone! I rarely read nonfiction and even more rare is an essay collection, so I don‘t have a good idea of what I like the way I do when it comes to fiction and genre. 24h
MatchlessMarie I think most essay collections I read average about 3 ⭐️ for me. Or short story collections too. It‘s kind of inevitable that a whole collection can‘t win you over. 🧁 (edited) 2h
Ruthiella @MatchlessMarie That‘s fair. I also rarely read short story collections. I suspect the short form just isn‘t my style in fiction or nonfiction. 41m

Day 6 of #37by37

Read a bunch of monster books yesterday which seemed suitable for a 13th. Was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed most of the Amazon Original series from October.

My favorite book read yesterday was Unwrap My Heart. ⬇️

MatchlessMarie I know this was supposed to be a joke book but OMG. When I tell you I am Sofia. She is so hopelessly awkward and cringe. Reminded me a lot of me at 17 (and now let‘s be real 🙃). It was adorable and I laughed so much too. 2d

‘Warning: After you read this book you will believe in alien life.‘

A decent sequel to Strieber‘s memoir Communion. I will have to get the rest of the books as I didn‘t realize there were more in between.

Book 5/Communion

#OffMyShelf “made me happy”

This was a posthumous publication of four previously unpublished novels, four short stories and an essay by Pym - a must for any Pym fanatic. The title novel is the longest and the probably best, but I loved all of this collection. I just love Pym‘s sedate and subtly humorous style. Each section has a short introduction by the editor and Pym‘s long time friend, Hazel Holt.

I adore anything Emily Austin writes. These poems were excellent.

willaful I didn't get into Everybody in This Room Will Someday Be Dead but then I loved her story in Be Gay, Do Crimes, so I want to try her again. 7h
MatchlessMarie @willaful I also enjoyed We Could Be Rats that I read this year. I know her style isn‘t for everyone but I love it. 2h
