Fantasia, an Algerian Cavalcade
Fantasia, an Algerian Cavalcade | Assia Djebar
2 posts | 5 read
In this stunning novel, Assia Djebar intertwines the history of her native Algeria with episodes from the life of a young girl in a story stretching from the French conquest in 1830 to the War of Liberation of the 1950s. The girl, growing up in the old Roman coastal town of Cherchel, sees her life in contrast to that of a neighboring French family, and yearns for more than law and tradition allow her to experience. Headstrong and passionate, she escapes from the cloistered life of her family to join her brother in the maquis' fight against French domination. Djebar's exceptional descriptive powers bring to life the experiences of girls and women caught up in the dual struggle for independence - both their own and Algeria's.

The book is a mix of different genres that are combined through almost lyrical prose into a story of colonialism, horrors of war - all intertwined with a woman's voice, women's stories from the past and the author's personal perception on femininity, language, the clash of two cultures ... Very good written book with some unforgettable descriptions/scenes of the French invasion in #Algeria

Simona It is worth to read it even just because of the language @batsy She have very thoughtful ways of expressions, and I think that this isn‘t just because of a good Slovenian translation. 2y
Simona @Librarybelle You can find all kinds of genres in this book … from historical to autobiographical moments, to the semi-literary genres. It is good and unusual mix, but it works. 2y

My current read is To Paradise (which is probably gonna keep me busy for two more days), audio companion for walks is The Grit in the Pearl: The Scandalous Life of Margaret, Duchess of Argyle by Lyndsy Spence, and because I was distracted with To Paradise - two books from previous #weeklyforecast For A.Djebar book I can‘t find English edition, so my translation is Love, Fantasy, and the second book is Small Country by Gaël Faye.

Cinfhen I can‘t wait to discuss To Paradise with you !!! 2y
