In seventeenth-century France, Louis XIV rules with flamboyantambition. From the Hall of Mirrors to the vermin-infested attics of the Chateauat Versailles, courtiers compete to please the king, sacrificing fortune, principles and sacred bonds. Here, Marie-Josephe de la Croix looks forward to assisting herbrother, Yves, in the scientific study of the rare sea monster he has captured. But when Marie-Josephe makes adiscovery about the sea creature that threatens all her brother, the courtiersand the King understand, it is left to her to defy the institutions that powerher world. But in the decadent court of KingLouis, where morality is skewed and corruption reigns - will anyone listen to asingle voice? Somehow, she must find the courage to follow her heart andher convictions - even at the cost of changing her life forever.

Some beautiful #bookmail arrived today. I read about it in a Tor.com article and had to track it down.

Dig this premise:

A sea monster is captured by a naturalist working for King Louis XIV and brought to live in the fountains of Versailles where a lady of the court falls in love with it.

It‘s The Shape of Water in the late 1600s!

Lcsmcat I remember that fountain ! I took about a million pictures of it back when we used film and each shot cost $! 6y

Day 17 #readingwomenmonth - vacation reads. A day late, Litsy crashed on me last night for some reason. Not exactly a vacation, but I was visiting my in-laws for one day... and still brought physical book, kobo, notebook, and reading log. You know, just in case. 🙃

Day 6 #readingwomenmonth - BOTM. I don't have a Book of the Month subscription so I'm going to take this prompt literally in a different way... the book I've been reading for the past month or so. It is excellent so far. I'm not sure why I'm reading it so slowly... sometimes a book just demands to be savoured.

#readjanuary #royals The first ebook I ever borrowed from my library using OverDrive. Set in the court of Versailles, when a mermaid is discovered and kept in the fountains. The protagonist, a female scientist, wants to study and understand the mermaid; King Louis XIV wants to eat her. Real life characters and sci fi/fantasy elements combine for a great read.

Pickpick

A terrific book that takes the court of Versailles and merges it with the discovery of mermaids. And somehow feels realistic. Would love to read more like it.
