NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERFINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDA beautifully crafted memoir, rich with humor and wisdom. Will Schwalbe, author ofThe End of Your Life Book ClubThe idea of a cultured gay man leaving New York City to care for his aging mother in Paris, Missouri, is already funny, and George Hodgman reaps that humor with great charm. But then he plunges deep, examining the warm yet fraught relationship between mother and son with profound insight and understanding. Alison Bechdel, author of Fun HomeWhen George Hodgman leaves Manhattan for his hometown of Paris, Missouri, he finds himselfan unlikely caretaker and near-lethal cookin a head-on collision with his aging mother, Betty, a woman of wit and will. Will George lure her into assisted living? When hell freezes over. He cant bring himself to force her from the home both treasurethe place where his fathers voice lingers, the scene of shared jokes, skirmishes, and, behind the dusty antiques, a rarely acknowledged conflict: Betty, who speaks her mind but cannot quite reveal her heart, has never really accepted the fact that her son is gay.As these two unforgettable characters try to bring their different worlds together, Hodgman reveals the challenges of Bettys life and his own struggle for self-respect, moving readers from their small towncrumbling but still colorfulto the star-studded corridors of Vanity Fair. Evocative of The End of Your Life Book Club and The Tender Bar, Hodgmans New York Times bestselling debut is both an indelible portrait of a family and an exquisitely told tale of a prodigal sons return. From the Hardcover edition.

I want to see more from the Kevins of this world. Sometimes, 20 or 30 years later, we get an apology out of them when they‘re challenged on their past behavior. But I want more. I want to see them put actions to their apologies — getting involved in anti-bullying or providing some type of support to marginalized kids.

At the end of July, the lovely George Hodgman committed suicide. He had been a well respected editor and wrote a terrific book about returning home to care for his mother. He would occasionally comment on my Facebook posts and for some reason I felt very close to him. He was funny and cared so much about so much. Yesterday I realized I hadn‘t heard from him and in looking him up I learned of his death. I‘m so sad that he needed to leave us.

Suet624 Please consider reading his book. It is a wonderful read. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/22/books/george-hodgman-dead.html (edited) 5y

Suet624 @Leftcoastzen Oh, I hope you can find the time to read it. He had so much to say and you will definitely laugh out loud on several occasions. 5y
Suet624 @pigeonsandcrows I'm so glad you loved it as much as I did. 5y
Suet624 @Nute He will be missed. A number of months ago he had a manic episode where it looked like he might hurt himself. People went into overdrive on Facebook to find him and get him treatment. Hundreds of comments followed in which people expressed their deep love for him and his work. I'm glad that he saw those and I'm sorry it wasn't enough to keep him here. 5y
Nute These kind of stories will always be heartbreaking. I have lived through this reality with a friend. It still hurts. It is nice knowing that he saw his messages of love and caring. I‘m sure there was comfort in those kind words. 5y

I had the great pleasure of hearing George Hodgman read and speak tonight. He was kind and gracious and I can't wait to read his memoir.

goodbyefrancie I enjoyed this! A little quirky, a little funny, a little touching. 7y
LyndseyReads @goodbyefrancie Excellent! I like that balance. It's funny. That's the impression I got about him as a person; he seemed a little quirky, a little funny, and a little sentimental. :) 7y

A memoirs - this book is both humorous and poignant. The author recounts his time of being sole caregiver to his 90-year-old mother (a character to be sure) while at the same time reflects on his own life as a gay man and how it impacted his relationship with his parents and shaped his life. I enjoyed the book, but found it easy to put down when other activities called.

I knew this was going to be about a son helping his mother as she aged. What I didn't realize was that the author would offer so much information on social issues. It is funny, heartwarming, and informational. People will grow to love Betty and her son.

My Sunday date. Hilarious, yes, but also deeply tender.
"When she opens her eyes, I put an old soft towel in the dryer to warm up and then spread it around her feet, which she complains get cold at night."

I'm going to have to take breaks, because feelings. Yuck. Feelings. Who needs those.

#TBRTuesday. I give up. The TBR is sky high. I just wing it. At least October will be planned a bit better.

Robothugs I don't feel so alone about my stack of TBR... it's insane and I'm afraid to share a photo of it. 😅 8y
shawnmooney Lol. Happy problem, hey? I see Essex Serpent there. I just made my October TBR and it didn't quite make the final cut. But I'm dying to read it, so I'm thinking it'll be a November read at the latest. If I notice you starting it sooner, I might reconsider: it'd be fun to read it in tandem! 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @shawnmooney I'm good with November- pretty sure I can keep busy til then! 😜 8y

Luckily, the townspeople are happy to look after her even if they don't understand her peculiar need for books. Marooned in a farm town that's almost beyond repair, Sara starts a bookstore in honor of her friend's memory.

Pickpick

This memoir is part sweet tribute to beloved parents, part painful journey through Hodgman's life, as he struggles to accept and love himself. Growing up he knows from an early age that he is gay, different, doesn't fit in. He picks up self-destructive behaviors, always jokes about everything, too much self-deprecating language, a drug habit he eventually kicks. Sad because he seems so sweet. Is it really so hard to love yourself? Apparently.
